Reading a paper on how conferences force you to write up stuff that else would remain in an embryonic stage in order to write a conference submission that (hopefully) allows to put some preliminary results in writing. Yes, this is about #dhd2027 and #prodatphil

@goncourt ich betrachte das im Kontext eines Projekts, da hier auch ein hashtag hat: #prodatphil

Den Namen "Hoyningen-Huene" muss ich jedes Mal nachschlagen. #prodatphil

Hicks even has his own Wikipedia entry: "an American geologist, zoologist and college administrator" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Ezra_Hicks
In the last days I have searched for data on attorneys and mathematicians, high school teachers and inventors. Philosophy in the US in the 19th and early 20th century was the domain not just of academic philosophers. This at least is my main takeaway from this fascinating inquiry into the - more or less forgotten - authors of these papers. 6/6

And "John Lincoln Hicks" can be found on a genealogy website (in fact, this investigation of 19th century philosophers would not have been possible without these tools - I am very grateful for the interest of US citizens to find out more about their ancestors). 4/

The author of the letter does not divulge his own Christian names. But he mentions his mother who was a first cousin to Abraham Lincoln as well as his brother, "John Lincoln Hicks" who was named after his grandfather John who was also Abraham's uncle. 3/

In such searches, the first task is to find out the full given and family name of the person in question. In the case of Hicks, this seemed to be impossible. It almost seems as if Hicks did not want the world to know about his given names, maybe because he himself didn't like them? 2/

As I had promised yesterday, here is the story of my quest for "L. E. Hicks": https://ark.archive.org/ark:/13960/t9w10h307 Short reminder: I am building a corpus of 19th century philosophy. For each author to be included I need to know when the person died in order to determine the copyright status of their works. 1/

Tomorrow: the geologist and "cousin Abe". #prodatphil

It seems the logic machine did not make a lot of money. The philosopher-inventor had to practice law: https://archive.org/details/per_chicago-daily-tribune_1916-03-16_75_65/page/17/mode/1up?q=%22charles+p.+r.+macaulay%22

Of course, it is a bit sad to see that he had to leave this world so early. But he seems to have enjoyed life: "Mr. Anderson occupies a fine residence in one of the pleasantest parts of the city, and his home, within and without, bears evidence of refinement and ample means. Socially Mr. and Mrs. A. occupy an enviable position, and represent the culture and breeding of the first-class residents of Keokuk." But, as I learned today, genealogists do not only dig into archives. They also walk cemeteries taking pictures of grave stones. https://de.findagrave.com/memorial/113244547/joseph_g-anderson
Joseph G. Anderson died on February 16th 1889 at the age of 40. #prodatphil 6/ -
So our work should be done, right? Unfortunately, the contemporary biography was written, when Anderson was still alive. But a conclusive determination of the copyright status of his work requires a date of death. #prodatphil 5/

Thanks to the tireless work of US genealogists, we find this biography of Joseph G. Anderson, native son of Cincinatti, and attorney-at-law in Keokuk, Iowa. https://iagenweb.org/boards/lee/biographies/index.cgi?read=815991 We learn: "Mr. Anderson has a genuine love for learning, and even amid the duties of his profession gives time to the study of logical and metaphysical subjects, and has been the author of some articles written for the "Journal of Speculative Philosophy."" #prodatphil 4/

If you scroll to the last page of the paper, you see that Mr. Anderson did not reside in Cambridge (Harvard) or New Haven (Yale), but in Keokuk, Iowa. https://archive.org/details/jstor-25665860/page/n6/mode/1up 3/ #prodatphil

The crux: the author must have died before 1955 in order to be included. We only want to include texts that are in the public domain. And in Europe this means that the author must have been dead for 70 years (I simplify). #prodatphil 2/

Why does creating a corpus in 19th century philosophy involve the search for gravestones in Iowa? https://de.findagrave.com/memorial/113244547/joseph_g-anderson #prodatphil

As some of you may remember, I am currently building a corpus on philosophy of science between 1820 and 1920. Question: a paper with the title "The Army and Science": relevant or to be excluded?

A barchart with 25 terms that appear predominantly in French texts on logic (still a small corpus) rather than French novels - and 25 terms that appear in French novels rather than texts on logic. Both novel corpus and software from @tcdh logic corpus is our own. H/t @christof, Keli Du and many others. A clear success for open and reproducible science in the #DigitalHumanities. 1/ #prodatphil

We need three file archives from the corpus: two as zip, one as tar.gz. *sigh #subtoot #prodatphil
