Joanna Olin, vice president for government relations and chief of staff at Smith College, has a guest essay this morning in The Chronicle of Higher Education entitled, “We need to preserve human writing before it is too late.” Her theme is that in the age of AI, colleges must be the custodians of the written word. She provides an interesting historical perspective on the issue.

Excerpt: "The responsibility of higher education is not only pedagogical, but custodial. Colleges must sustain their libraries, archives, special collections, digital repositories, and systems of provenance, as well as the #librarians, #archivists, and scholars of #library and #InformationScience whose expertise makes those resources trustworthy and usable.
