@barrd I would also have thrown Shout in there, coincidentally. Perhaps ‘Downtown’ (not the Abbey) from Petula Clark? Choosing just *ONE* of The Monkees (not a real band) oeuvre would be a tough one, but I’m rather fond of ‘Daydream Believer’. And, perhaps more obscurely, but an absolute gem, IMO: Elenore by The Turtles.

Sometimes I recognize I like a song because it's derivative of something else, and even though I prefer the original version(s) of that (type of) song, the new version is REALLY cool (in this case, I heard a Taylor Swift song that reminded me of Bob Dylan, which also sounded like Beck and Lisa Loeb, because he obviously influenced them).
And you realize it's not that familiar feeling/sentiment that "everything has been done", but it's just that everything borrows and takes from everything (I should know, my own songs are basically just Ramones songs, and the Beatles just took skiffle and made pop songs out of it).
Human creativity is a crazy cyclical thing.
