  1. Song Lyric Sunday – Behavior

The theme for Song Lyric Sunday is finding a song that reflects different types of behavior. I chose ‘Positively 4th Street’ by Bob Dylan. This song always reminded of a relationship that had reached its end and the finger pointing and bickering had begun. The lyrics are fantastic as is always the way with a Dylan song. Enjoy!

    The Song

Released by Bob Dylan on July 29, 1965, “Positively 4th Street” is a famously bitter and scathing breakup/diss song recorded in New York City. It features a driving organ-heavy rock sound.

It was issued as a standalone single just a few weeks after “Highway 61 Revisited.” and reached number 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 8 on the UK Singles Chart. It was inspired by the New York Folk Scene. It has been thought that the song serves as a fierce “diss track” directed at the judgmental folk purists and “plastic people” in Greenwich Village who felt betrayed when Dylan went electric. Dylan however has deflected those autobiographical claims.

On researching the meaning behind the song I came across this from Tony Attwood at bob-dylan.org.uk

“Two lines of music – just eight bars long – repeated over and over and over. And yet it is brilliant, a song one never tires of because the record is so perfect in its delivery. (And indeed, although I didn’t realise it when I wrote the original copy of this review, I’m agreeing with Heylin who called it, “one of his greatest ever vocal performances in a studio setting”.

Maybe because it is so viscous in its lyrics that the repetition of the eight bars over and over again without variation just brings home that feeling of unresolved hatred. “You’ve got a lot of nerve to say you are my friend…”

It is the absolute and complete song of disdain.

When has there been another piece with such a strong opening? It is a wall of disgust that pours out from Dylan, attacking the woman (at least we presume it is a woman he is after) while the music continues unchanging, as the emotion is unchanging too. (Although I must admit, coming back to the song some ten years after I wrote the first version of this review, perhaps it is also about everyone who protested about his use of electric guitars).

Even if we have never faced someone with such feelings of hatred, we can all empathize with the notion that “You just want to be on the side that’s winning.” How many people like that do we know?

The musical format – unrelenting strophic – was used by Dylan a lot in his earlier works – verse, verse, verse until he has said all he has to say. It was only later that he moved to ternary form with its “middle 8” section. But nowhere else is it used with such anger, but with such straightness of delivery.”

While rumors frequently tied the lyrics to specific acquaintances or fellow musicians like Phil Ochs, general consensus treats it as a broader attack on hypocrisy, false friendship, and self-righteous critics.

What do you say? I still think it’s a break up song. The closing lines confirm it for me.

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

  3. …but that doesn’t absolve it from feeling like it’s below his quality. is probably the most ambitious of em all, and if you were a person that liked , there’s a lot there for you. It’s an album that you can see will be used for the bot and influencer accounts & to be fair, it’s sonically interesting. My own overthinking self compared to from Kendrick (after the battle) in a way that I did when I listen to their verses on . Two people can see the same things and come away with it differently. If I think is being metatextual, it sounds like he’s using “Princess” ODing to refer to hiphop being burnt out to him. Again, that’s me just overthinking things and part of the reason I made this account in the first place :).

Now, the obvious issues, the non-OVO folks are going to loathe these projects and I don’t think he really cared to avoid that. Hate listens still count. Do I think people are going to give it a fair…

Take one grifting, lying madman, mix him with a massive lawsuit and sprinkle it with the buyout of the ages. Welcome to flavour town.

And how sweet it is to see an entire brand made into a satirical publishers little bitch for our entertainment. Truly there are silver linings everywhere.
