#SkyWatch #Astrophotography The #PinWheel Galaxy aka #M101 is a large face-on spiral galaxy 21 million light years away. It is 170,000 light years across and contains an estimated 1 trillion stars. Its spiral arms have been distorted by gravitational interaction with its six prominent companion galaxies. These interactions have also helped to create many large hydrogen-rich star formation areas in the galaxy. In addition, five internal supernovae have been identified. #StillLearning

Reprocessing a slim stack of 18 DSLR frames @ 15 seconds each, I was able to get a tantalizing image of M101 — the Pinwheel Galaxy — shot on July 24, 2020. It’s certainly not a great picture but demonstrates it’s worth another try, with better equipment and techniques. Maybe image again in May when M101 is high above Polaris. Used: My Vixen VC200L 8-inch Cassegrain telescope, Canon EOS 6D Mk. 2 at ISO 8000. #astrophoto #astronomy #M101 #Pinwheel
