Hey did anyone else see #Pillowfort is going nonprofit? 👀

I remember giving $10 seed money back in 2017. Apparently I haven't posted for 5 years tho. My account's still there. I also remember there was some controversy over whether to allow loli art (as per usz). I don't know how that ended.

The email abt going nonprofit was very honest & cool from Julie. Does anyone love PF? I threw my lot in with #Dreamwidth earlier this year but maybe PF is worth reconsideration.

Piece of good news! looks like #Pillowfort is gonna hit the funding goal for this month! It was at 80% a few days(?) ago, and now it's at 96%! (There's still reserve funds, but it's great to keep hitting these goals.) A place that's helped me keep my sanity, being Anti-GenAI - love to see it! +

A much as I would love for there to be a mass exodus from Bluesky, that would call for a huge chunk of the userbase to get serious about holding the company's feet to the fire instead of just making grumble posts about it, and that degree of collective momentum and dedication is nothing to take for granted. This is why I'm so bitter about all the puff pieces that contributed to the BS hype ( https://www.pillowfort.social/posts/3323907 ) instead of warning people about what they were in for. ( https://osteophage.neocities.org/writing/bluesky-offloadable-moderation ) A bunch of people fell for the trap and now feel too sucked into it to be actually willing to leave.

They're not actually stuck with the place, though. Just expect to face an uphill battle, is what I'm saying. I'm trying to contribute how I can by urging folks to share my big post on the BS moderation scheme, but I expect a lot of folks to run up against a wall of "but where else can we go?" -- because they've already mentally ruled out anything that isn't already glitzy and popular, not realizing that that's the tradeoff. Bluesky taking big venture capital (and enjoying a lot of positive press) is exactly why the siterunners feel entitled to act like this. So if folks want a website with better ethical commitments, they have to be willing to branch out into the kind of thing that doesn't so easily make headlines.

Come to Pillowfort, its CEO is one of the few precious ones that knows when to shut the hell up
