  1. Yeah, sure, new books are great, but do you ever read old books?

Have you ever read ‘American Pastoral’ by Philip Roth?

It's his brilliant disembowelling of America in the 20th Century, and all its hopes of prosperity, civic order, and domestic bliss.

  5. #Audiblehas several #SaulBellow novels that are free (if you subscribe). I haven't read anything of his except high school or college freshman. He and #PhilipRoth were discussed and recommended in passing.

  8. A quotation from Philip Roth

Old age isn’t a battle; old age is a massacre.

  10. "No, he did not lack imagination any longer - the imagining of the abhorrent was now effortless. There was no delusion that he could any longer clutch at to soften whatever surprise was next.”

    #PhilipRoth.

Recently read American Pastoral. It wasn't my favorite due to its verbosity and slow pace but the brilliant social commentary is quite applicable to today. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  14. @flexghost. Too bad #PhilipRoth isn't here to write this novel. Oh wait, #JoshuaCohen, who wrote #TheNetanyahus, would do a brilliant job! Maybe a sequel? #JoshuaCohen -- if you are on Mastodon, I'm begging you!!

  16. In the frenzied, unrelenting march of progress, it is modern technology that has risen to the forefront, propelled by mankind's insatiable desire for mastery. The landscape of our contemporary existence is irrevocably altered, becoming a playground for the whims of our boundless intellect. This vast, interconnected world has left no stone unturned, no recess untouched, as it infiltrates the very core of our lives with the ruthless efficiency of a conquering army.

  17. Finished reading Nemesis by Philip Roth. It's about a polio outbreak in Newark, New Jersey in 1944. Surprisingly idealistic and compassionate. I'd even go so far as to say it's a gentle novel, which is not exactly what Roth is known for. The first part was extremely engaging, but it does drag in the second part and gloss over some pretty emotional stuff in the third part. Not bad, though, and probably useful for people hard hit by Covid.

  18. Modern technology is our double-edged sword, and we, its unwitting wielders. We are both masters and slaves, architects and pawns in this intricate dance of progress. We are at once blessed and cursed by the creations of our own hands, and within this paradox lies the essence of the human condition, laid bare for all to see.

  19. "The boy himself was the stump, and until he was taken to live with his mother's married sister in Brooklyn ten months later, I was the prosthesis."

  20. I find #PhilipRoth just absolutely tedious. His books, I think, were written for a different age, one I am thankfully not in.
