  5. This will be slightly #geeky, and probably only of interest to #electronics hobbyists and #guitar players. I happen to sit in the intersection of that particular #Venn diagram.

When I was a teenager, having only been playing guitar for a few years, I owned a guitar #effects pedal that went on to become legendary - the Boss HM-2 "Heavy Metal" #pedal. Its sound is still ubiquitous in metal.

I don't have it any more. I think I traded it for an analog chorus, which was a seriously expensive pedal back then. Although I have other #distortion effects, I've missed it a lot over the years.

Well, lots of hobbyists build their own effects. And the circuit schematics for many effects, particularly the classics, are available online. So like many others, I decided to build my own HM-2.

This image is the schematic for the #HM2. It's not the most complicated pedal, but it's a league above something like an Ibanez Tube Screamer. As far as active devices go, it's got 6 #opamps and 10 #transistors of various types, along with a bunch of diodes for multiple types and stages of clipping, and the usual jumble of capacitors and resistors. Oh, and four potentiometers.

  6. I was referred to another awesome website where you can configure Bass Guitars before you buy. You see the external configuration changes in the generated image also!

The site is below. The first Bass I made is a gorgeous fretless, full scale.

  7. I'm floating on pure Universal Love. I've just encountered a site where I can build the specifications of exquisite Bass Guitars from scratch.

Instead of talking about the experience, I've put up two screenshots. There are more than 60 parameters you may change to suit your taste!

Go through the experience and see what a wonderful Bass you can create for yourself

  8. Now that I have a decent speaker (relatively), and the old echo/chorus/flanger pedal of my youth rescued from dog pee, and now that I've read that the speaker is for #guiar OR bass, here's four notes from a guitar.
I've explored this #pedal's options a lot, and #flange is one of my faves. The guitar's higher register gives it more to chew on than the bass.
Now I have 2-1/2 solid guiar rigs in my room, but it's still just me.

  9. I haven't tried it at higher clock rates yet. I probably will, but it's a case of diminishing returns. To go from 4ms to 3ms, I would have to push the clock from 6MHz to 8MHz. It's a big jump.

But it's much easier to control the delay with the M65831. In its "easy" mode (not using an MCU to control it) there are four inputs to select one of 16 different delay ranges, and then you only have to vary the clock over a few megahertz to cover that range. The longest delay with a 2MHZ clock is ~197ms, while the same clock gets you ~12ms in the shortest range. And if you drop to 1 MHz, you can get it to ~400ms. And it still sounds fine, to my ear.

So this one chip can go from metallic flanging and phasing, through various kinds of chorus, plate reverb, early reflection, room / hall / cave echo, spring reverb, all the way to true echo / delay.

The only downside I can see is that it's a 24-pin IC, rather than the 16-pin PT2399, so it's not as compact. But it's available in SOIC packages, too, so that shouldn't be too bad a limitation.

It's originally a Mitsubishi IC, but clones of it are everywhere. Anyone else tried this IC? Thoughts on it?

  11. Bass Guitar Amplifier Adjustment

Adjusting a bass guitar amplifier involves setting the EQ (equalization) and other controls to get the best tone for your style, venue, and preferences. Here’s a step-by-step guide to dialing in your bass amp settings:

    1. Set Initial Controls
Gain: Start with the gain at a low level. Increase it gradually until you hear distortion, then back off until the sound is clean. If you prefer a grittier tone, leave the gain slightly higher.
Volume: Set the volume to a comfortable level. Adjust it based on your playing environment, such as practicing alone or playing with a band.
    2. Adjust EQ (Bass, Mid, Treble)
Bass: Controls the low-end frequencies. Increasing the bass can add warmth and depth. For a more defined sound, avoid cranking the bass too high, as it can make the sound muddy.
Mids: Mids are essential for a clear and punchy tone, especially in a mix. Higher mids add clarity and presence; reducing them can create a scooped sound often used in slap bass.
Treble: Controls the high-end frequencies. Increase it for more clarity and definition, or roll it back for a warmer sound.
    3. Use Shape/Contour Controls (if available)
Many bass amps have a "shape" or "contour" control that adjusts the mids for different tones. Experiment to see how these affect your sound, especially if you want a quick, scooped tone.
    4. Experiment with Extra Features
Compression: Some amps have a built-in compressor, which smooths out your dynamics and adds sustain. Start low, increasing only until it’s just noticeable.
Drive or Overdrive: If you like a more aggressive, gritty tone, use the drive/overdrive knob to add subtle distortion.
    5. Room Acoustics
Adjusting your EQ based on the room’s acoustics is important, especially for live gigs. Rooms with a lot of bass resonance may require turning down the low-end or cutting certain frequencies.
    6. Test and Fine-Tune
Play different styles and techniques, like slap, fingerstyle, and pick, to see how your tone holds up.

  12. A call to #pedal makers! As far as I know there’s no such thing as a pedal that takes a mic via XLR and gives you gain control and improves tone, maybe gives you reverb and that’s IT. Any vocal processing unit will do that, but they wanna focus on harmonies & pitch correction that I don’t want. ALL I want is the smallest pedal possible to give me gain and tone control, maybe a dash of reverb / delay. Please make that for me and I’ll buy one! #guitarpedals #effectspedals

  13. I went to search for a site where I can post content for free. I found one, all they do is put some ads and if you are as me you will have an ad block running already.

What I did not expect is a full-blown site builder with everything, including kitchen sinks, 32 channel mixing consoles, 18" subwoofers and full range speakers :)

All I need is a place where I put my markdown formatted text directly and get it published immediately.

Now I need to wade through the system to find where I can put in straight markdown text, no formatting from them , no YSWYG editor

    `wc -m ~/gate/pgm/hugo/quickstart/content/posts/fifth-post-fx2k-reportI.md`

    `10034' was the output!

I just saw in this post that markdown is not officially suported on mastodon.

@stefano what is the case on this server? I have md text that I want to display with only unsorted and sorted lists and formatting of bold italic
