Good morning!
Today I'm working at the Ethnographic Library at the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo; the day is dedicated to proof-reading the #OscarMamen #DigitalScholarlyEdition and peer reviewing the #DSE Handbook. -

@delaiglesia I wouldn't wave this off and point them to the original documents instead. In my case, the #OscarMamen diaries use the same mark repeatedly, and encoding it beyond the usual "supplied" tag could be an easy way to look it up. But sure, I could probably supply an attribute or choose something visually for the presentation layer.

Hei #DigitalScholarlyEditions #TEIXML crowd!
🙋 I have a question for you: have you ever used the #Unicode symbol for insertion of a character or word into a text, U+2380 ⎀?
Or how would you encode the insertion mark in a text?
In the #OscarMamen pocket diaries, the insertion mark is used frequently and I would like to encode it somehow.
Suggestions? Examples?
I feels that I cannot get any good results googling anymore: #Enshittification of the search engine, I guess...

🧵 1/2
I spent some time in the morning digitising the 1916 pocket diary of #OscarMamen.
After four years in #Mongolia, Mamen took a leave from working as a tobacco seller and tradesman and returned to #Norway in 1915. He married his childhood friend and long-distance pen pal, Karen Oulie Hansen.
Both returned to the east in November 1915; however, they took residence in Kalgan (now Zhangjiakou, Inner Mongolia) and later on in the busy harbour city of Tientsin (#Tianjin).

There is a special flavour of melancholia in the notebook diaries of #OscarMamen from the years 1937 and 1938.
He hadn't been in Mongolia or China for the past 5 years, and seemingly, much had changed upon his return.
He notices modernisation & 'Europeanisation' of the Chinese & Mongols living in Kalgan, changes that would make the old town at the Great Wall almost unrecognisable. Mamen lived in the region for many years and was well-acquainted with its layout, streets, trails, and passes.

Minor update on the #OscarMamen project:
Today, I scanned two diaries, from 1937 and 1938. They cover the same period as the unpublished manuscript "Atter Et År i Østen" (1938), which I am preparing for publication on https://www.bokselskap.no/ by Dec 2025.
While the manuscript is typewritten in Norwegian, both diaries are handwritten in English. Sometime during his life in Mongolia and China, Mamen switched from writing longer narrative texts in Norwegian to almost exclusively using English. -

Today, on May 9th, 1912, from the Chinese market town Maimaching to the east of the Mongolian capital #Urga (now #Ulaanbaatar), #OscarMamen writes in his pocket diary:
+5° R(eaumur) in the morning
Cloudy
N. W. snowstorm
Nobody out. -

The first pages of the T.J. & J. Smith's pocket diary #OscarMamen uses while he is working in #Mongolia and #China, there is a printed almanack for the year 1913. In this almanack, there is only one pencil note.
Behind Saturday, 9th August, he notes "Mors birthday" (Mom's birthday) -

My recent obsession with the #OscarMamen travel logs of his journey(s) to & time in #Mongolia #BogdKhanate, I wrangled data from a photo archive database.
For unknown reasons, the database doesn't have a field for "date". All date info is stored alongside content descriptions of the photos and their location in the physical archive in the free-text field "motive description".
To work through 7.500 photos + matching them to log entries, I re-taught myself #regex & @OpenRefine
Can recommend! -

If health and life permit, I will soon blog about the #DigitalScholarlyEdition of 📓 #diaries and manuscripts by Norwegian adventurer and anthropologist-dilettante #OscarMamen.
Mamen travelled to #Mongolia 🇲🇳 in 1911 and witnessed the revolution of 1911, the rise and fall of the Bogdh Khanate, the revolution of 1921, the establishment of the Mongolian People's Republic in 1924, and the so-called Nankou Campaign in 1937, during which the Japanese occupied China's north-eastern region.
Stay tuned! -
