  2. Amundsen #OnThis Day

    On 14 December 1911 Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and four other team members are the first to reach the geographical South Pole. Amundsen's crew were: Helmer Hanssen Sverre Hassel Oscar Wisting Olav Bjaaland credit: bilinmiyor, CC BY-SA 4.0 , via Wikimedia Commons There were also 14 shore crew supporting the expedition. Reaching the South Pole was an amazing achievement for the small independent nation of Norway.

  3. Today in 1995, 30 years ago: After 10 years, the Argentine Emilio Scotto returns to Buenos Aires, which becomes the world record for the longest motorcycle trip. He left his home on January 17, 1985, having traveled a total of 735,000 km and visited 214 independent countries and territories. Emilio rode the entire trip on a 1980 Honda Goldwing GL1100 motorcycle, nicknamed “Black Princess,” which consumed 47,000 liters of fuel, 1,300 liters of oil, 86 tires, 12 batteries, and 9 seats.
