A Brief Note on Modern Expression
It has come to our attention that many people enjoy sharing small updates about themselves online. A thought. A feeling. A photograph taken at arm’s length. Sometimes all three at once.
This activity is commonly described as healthy self-expression. One is encouraged to “be authentic,” preferably several times a day, and ideally with visual confirmation that authenticity has occurred.
On Connection and Visibility
Platforms built for this purpose assure users that such sharing is wholesome. A way to stay connected. A way to be seen. A way to remind friends, acquaintances, former coworkers, and people one barely remembers meeting that one continues to exist.
Visibility, we are told, is connection. Presence is participation. Silence is absence.
The Companion Link
Of course, these updates rarely arrive alone. They are often paired with a book mention, a link, a mild opinion, or a passing grievance. The statement is short. The context is thin. The expectation is understood.
Acknowledgment may arrive in the form of reactions, comments, clicks, or nothing at all. Each outcome is treated as meaningful.
A Question Best Not Asked
One might reasonably wonder whether this habit encourages reflection or merely repetition. Whether it fosters genuine connection or simply trains the impulse to announce oneself and wait.
These are uncomfortable questions and should not occupy too much of our time.
After all, everyone is doing it. And when everyone is doing something, it is generally considered impolite to ask why.
