Tonight, our local #RochesterNY ice cream royalty, Abbotts Frozen Custard, was celebrating their 100th anniversary. They have been an iconic fixture at Ontario Beach for generations. I've been getting frozen custard there for over 60 years, since I was a kid. For the 100th party, the Seneca Park ZooMobile came to Abbotts.
I was babysitting the munchkin tonight, so I took him to get an Abbotts soft custard cone, which he enjoyed with such relish that he got it all over his face. Then we visited the zoomobile animals. He was wowed to hear that the box turtle can live to 80 years old, delightfully grossed out by the millipedes, and hypnotized by the enormous pulsating bullfrog.
Then we went across the street, to play on the playground. He loved getting dizzy on the push-merry-go-round. He would run until it was spinning fast, then leap on, staggering to hold on, shrieking and giggling when centrifugal force won out and he slid onto his rear.
Then we walked on the beach boardwalk. He called Lake Ontario an "ocean" with awe. He pointed excitedly at sailboats. He gathered handfuls of sand and threw them in the air to watch them scatter. He collected a pocketful of fluffy white gull feathers. Then we headed home for pizza.
It was an excellent evening. We both had a great time. Life has been depressing and stressful lately. An evening of ice cream, animals, and The Lake, in the company of a funny 6-year-old, was exactly the lift I needed!
