A Russian immigrant arrives builds the Myer empire falls in love with music and kicks off those free concerts in the Botanic Gardens back in the 1920s. Then his family funds the whole Music Bowl after he passes. He showed real gratitude to the place that made him rich and it is still pumping out music for Melbourne today. That is old school giving done right.

But these modern Australian billionaires They are playing a whole different game. They are not just tight compared to the Americans where the mega rich donate billions and get their names on buildings left right and centre. Our wealthy give very little relative to their fortunes. High net worth Australians lag way behind the US the UK even Canada and New Zealand in giving as a share of the economy. Their giving has flatlined while their wealth doubles every few years.
And it gets worse. A huge amount of that money is not even staying in the country. Reports keep showing hundreds of billions parked offshore in places like the Caymans Switzerland you name it. Tax havens are still their go to for dodging what they owe. So when these billionaires eventually pass away there is no inheritance tax here sure. But if the money is already sitting overseas in shell companies good luck to anyone here ever seeing it fund our schools hospitals or community projects.
They are not building lasting things out of gratitude anymore. They are stripping the place moving profits offshore and leaving the rest of us to pay for crumbling services and rising costs.
Tax them properly at the source close the loopholes and force some real give back before the money vanishes into overseas accounts for good.

@alexproe Today's #Tories would happily sell their own children to a future of fire, flood and pestilence as long as their offshore hoards remain untraceable, anonymous and tax-free. Take Jacob Rees-Mogg as the prime example of this extreme selfishness.
