(Tina should find a way to not use #regressivetaxation; i.e., stiffing the little guy with fees)

…with an #ODOT $242M gap, #Kotek now favors a “redirect, repeal and rebuild” approach.

“redirect”: free up money within ODOT budget that could instead go toward basic road maintenance.

“rebuild”: Come back to the Legislature in 2027 with a more comprehensive plan for funding ODOT…

“repeal”: ask Dems to scrap the bill she just muscled through…

  2. "Oregon Senate passes transportation bill along party lines" by KATU (ABC Portland) - ODOT layoffs and other transit cuts statewide have been averted as the state senate passed the transportation funding bill. This ends the special legislative session that began in late August but kept getting postponed waiting for one senator to recover from surgery so there would be enough votes to pass it. katu.com/news/politics/oregon- #ODOT #Oregon #transportation #politics #PNW

  3. "Special session of the Oregon Legislature, ODOT layoffs delayed" by Statesman Journal (Salem, Oregon) - Transportation funding bill passed Oregon House of Representatives. Senate vote delayed to Sept 17 due to partisan politics. Dems need every member present for a supermajority to pass the bill - one is recovering from surgery. Governor Kotek delayed ODOT layoffs until after the vote, which would prevent them if it passes. statesmanjournal.com/story/new #ODOT #Oregon #transportation #politics #PNW

  4. "Oregon special session over transportation bill delayed due to lack of quorum" by KATU News (ABC Portland) - 20 excused absences led to failure to reach a quorum in the Oregon legislature special session to finish a transportation funding bill. So the session planned just for today will continue next week to try again. katu.com/news/politics/oregon- #ODOT #Oregon #transportation #politics #PNW

  5. "Lawmakers reconvene to tackle $350M transportation gap" by @AxiosNews via @axios-local-portland-AxiosNews / Kale Williams - Oregon's state legislature will convene in a special session Friday to work out funding for the Oregon Dept of Transportation and local transportation programs which was unfinished when the regular session's clock ran out. Without a funding bill, layoffs and service cuts would begin. axios.com/local/portland/2025/ #ODOT #Oregon #transportation #politics #PNW

  6. Not surprised the #oregon #Dems have failed on #ODOT bill. They caved to the party of hurting people when they almost became a super majority. What a joke of an Oregon governor @tinakotek.bsky.social the #democrat party.

  7. I live not too far from this freeway. It's our own little Disneyland of sliding cars and trucks at this time of year.

If there is one thing you can always count on, it's that Oregon drivers have no idea wtf they are doing when it snows or gets icy. Not a clue. I finally learned how to drive on snow and ice to protect myself from the rest of you. No offense. You're awesome drivers 11 months out of they year. February is not your good side.

Last night, Rip City WrapUp (also written as Wrap-Up and Wrapup because we are Portland) got into a riff about why Oregon drivers just abandon their cars on the roadway when it snows. I think the conclusion was, "We panic."

    From the article:

“Road conditions on I-84 in the affected areas are considered slick, but passable,” ODOT said. “This series of crashes was caused by a combination of high winds blowing snow and drivers traveling too fast for the winter weather conditions in the area.”

    Yay Oregon!

  9. Central Ohio's lack of an urban growth boundary is understandable, given that "Greater Columbus" spans 10 counties, each with their own jurisdictions, but the lack of coordination between Delaware County and ODOT is really apparent: matternews.org/community/devel

  10. So... if there is a toll, this relieves congestion by moving it to the toll booths? To side streets? Shall people abandon cars & pogo stick from Vancouver to Beaverton? Some parts of traffic planning escapes me.

Wait. It's to raise $ for #ODOT. Times are a-changing.

How about sufficient light rail? Increasing flow on arteries by monitoring it & triggering lights? Incentives to live closer to work?

ODOT should hold a bake sale soon. 🧁

  11. @douglasvb @ai6yr #ODOT budget cuts mean that there's been way more accidents on the highway to Mt Bachelor this year. Today I saw a pickup on its side and a snowmobile thrown from it.

Maybe the snow mobile wasn't abandoned, but part of a wreck.

  12. #ODOT said I-84 from Troutdale to Hood River will likely remain closed overnight. Although we're warming up, it's slow, and the gorge is expected to remain too cold to melt the ice sufficiently to allow travel.

  13. #ODOT has closed I-84 in anticipation of the ice storm which was delayed. The wind is howling in Troutdale. ODOT urges people to stay home through tomorrow.

Hood River County has declared a state of emergency over current and expected conditions.

Down to about 32K without power, but another storm is bearing down.

  14. No More Freeways, a grassroots and community-funded 501c(3) organization, is raising money to be matched to total roughly $30,000 by the end of 2023, but they're a couple thousand short of their $15,000 goal! Please donate by midnight to help end freeway expansion in the Portland metro area! Oregon desperately needs a transportation revolution.

  15. It also does not help that half of the vehicles in rural #oregon are giant #pickups with extra lights and such slapped on them that shine directly at the eye level of reasonable cars, and #ODoT has not bothered installing reflectors in the dividing and shoulder lines.
