Stumbled upon this project when rejoining the fediverse and am not ashamed to admit that setting it up, tinkering and making small modifications, while revisiting photos/images I’ve collected and taken over the years has been just a ton of fun.

I’m honestly surprised at how much I enjoy it (not to mention it lets me put a domain to use that had been collecting dust).

@occult No worries. It seems a more than valid approach to these things. Noticed myself that I've been too much all over the place and at the very least using platforms like *cough* Instagram or pixelfed made matters worse, talking a vast archive of data essentially locked up in archives, walled gardens or (in case of pixelfed) just gone. So for now for most of my stuff I'm also opting for doing these things on my own again and crossposting from/via RSS, just not using #ocular but #bludit as a lightweight CMS (which helps me posting images from on the road while in itself being small enough to wrap my head around and dig through).

We had such a wonderful time on the island, and I'm glad I brought my camera with me. I only carried a 40mm pancake lens and a 100-300mm zoom. The prime was used for about 80-90% of the shots. I found 40mm to be a beautiful sweet spot for both small towns and landscapes. In hindsight I should have probably tried to do some panoramas with it for some of the most sprawling views.

Some days I wished I had brought with me a wider lens, but it forced me to practice my framing a bit more. Not trying some panos is on me, which would have take care of this to a certain extent.

Using a prime for most of the trip meant a variable was removed, and then I started paying more attention at how the light interacted with the different scenes. It's quite interesting to see streets morph when you know what to look for. Overall I didn't really felt that limited by it. I liked it so much that I think I've been using primes almost exclusively for my day to day. Just picking up a focal length or two and going on a walk, see how each recontextualizes a scene.

The small "desk" tripod I brought with me was very handy, but I really missed being able to frame scenes better without having to rely on some existing elevated spot to put it. Still, I'm very happy with some of the shots I got with it.

One thing I noticed for my landscape shots is that the AF seemed to be a bit off compared to when using the live view contrast detect mode on my 6D. I've tried to calibrate it now and should work better in the future (was backfocusing slightly) but I think this helped me pay more attention to do some manual focusing adjustments and not to rely entirely on AF.

Since arriving home and editing the best shots from the trip, I've been going out with a small lumix and olympus m43 camera that I now try to carry with me everywhere. They are wonderful little things, looking forward to share some more shots I've captured with them and some old vintage glass.

I still have to take some time to upload the majority of these pictures to my #ocular gallery, hope I can get to it today.

I've been working on a new thing! It's a re-write of #memoir in Lua, a photo album generator to share images with friends and family when you don't want to rely on cloud solutions.

In contrast to #ocular, memoir creates complete photo albums that support basic layouts and markdown, has a navigable tree structure and convenient multi-language support.

We had a magical time in Sardinia and I knew exactly what would be the first picture I would share when we came back. The first day we slept in Cala Gonone I woke up early to try to see the sunrise. I'm so happy I did.

#ocular update: you can now edit all texts in your favorite text editor by setting the EDITOR variable in the config.

This means you now have the chance to fix any typos you made because the script will prompt you to confirm your texts.
Also you can now easily see which keywords were already used and copy and paste from them.

There are some #ocular news!

It turned out that building the whole webring every time the gallery builds didn't scale well at all, so decided to decouple the webring code into it's own little script. It runs on my webserver and automatically builds the webring three times per day.

This means much faster build times for ocular itself and automated, regular updates to the webring - hooray!

Also I updated the ocular code itself to match some of @bd edits. Now the webring link in the navigation automatically links to http://webring.nchrs.xyz

I found a fairly cheap Cousances cast iron pan from the early 1900s in very good condition and it's perfect. This will be one to pass down to the grandchildren. First test run: fried tofu with mushrooms and peppers.

Because I can't stop myself, I'm procrastinating by further tweaking #ocular to add next/prev to detail views and improving the navigation so that when we come back to the feed we go straight to the same image we were just exploring.

The nice thing about small projects is that they are really easy to hack around with them. In a couple of hours I modified @rostiger #ocular image feed generator to my liking, adding a custom html detail view for each page, removed the webring feed generator and modified the styles, navigation and such.

Pretty happy with it now, and even happier I can easily change it whenever I feel like I need to add something else :tealheart:
