Day 2 of #occultober
The Marseille Tarot, or Le Tarot de Marseille if you’re nasty. The first tarot deck from Italy (thus the French name). Made for game, with no #esoteric meaning at all. Perhaps the trumps were used for some sort of cartomancy, but the Golden Dawn were the ones that really did the heavy lifting there setting up correspondences with astrology, elements, and of course a kabbalah. Note that the pip cards are just pips. The full art is a Waite-Smith invention

I’m going to regret doing this for multiple reasons.
Let’s kick off #occultober with the first #esoteric #tarot deck, Waite-Smith deck. (Why do we even mention the publisher? He’s just some rich dude with a printing press. He didn’t do shit.) Arthur Edward Waite commissioned Pamela Coleman Smith to make a deck based on the Golden Dawn imagery. This was the first tarot deck with images for the pip cards (minor arcana) in addition to the trumps (major arcana). Waite’s instructions varied in detail quite a lot, with many cards being Smith’s own creation.
The deck became so popular (no doubt due to it being not only the first, but also its public domain status) that it inspired many copycat decks.
