Bruno Guimaraes is a fine midfielder technically, exceptional in possession under pressure, but he’s so much more, he’s an energiser, a leader, a warrior, a chaser of lost balls and lost causes. The charismatic Brazilian will be a huge loss to Newcastle United tactically, technically and also emotionally.
His departure will hurt more than Sandro Tonali’s or Anthony Gordon’s. Guimaraes “got” Newcastle, understood the fans, loved their passion, and enjoyed a special city. But from the moment he reflected on his ambitions at 28, how they could best be met, and signalled his desire to move on respectfully, the die was cast, it was all about the size and timing of the deal.
Newcastle are absolutely right to hold out for an acceptable bid from Arsenal that reflects Guimaraes’ importance to them on and off the field. And that, in modern transfer parlance, begins with an 8 not a 7. In the current frenzied market, with two years left on a contract, and Tonali trading for £92m (albeit two years younger), Guimaraes is an £80m player (75+5).
He strengthens Arsenal further. As they face a long campaign on two fronts, Premier League and Champions League, plus the two cups, Arsenal need the dynamism of Guimaraes. He can play 6 or 8 (prefers 8). Arsenal defenders will appreciate his tenacious work in front of them. Their attackers will feed off his line-breaking passes. Their fans will love his commitment and technical quality.
He’ll dovetail well with Declan Rice, bringing even more power to the champions’ engine room. What it means to Martin Zubimendi, the versatile Mikel Merino and also to Myles Lewis-Skelly’s development is a debate, of course. His arrival would allow Mikel Arteta to ease Rice’s huge workload. If the deal does go through, Guimaraes is a signing that strengthens the belief that Arsenal will retain the title. #AFC #NUFC

Bruno Guimarães left Brazil on Sunday, flew overnight, and will arrive with #NUFC in Spain shortly.
Parties agreed to a delay of a few days but the amended plan was to return for Monday.
Guimarães has never said he won’t return or train as Arsenal work on finalising an agreement.🇧🇷

Arsenal and Newcastle in the process of finalising a move for Bruno Guimarães.
As revealed on @[email protected], discussions have been advanced for some time.
#NUFC waiting for a formal bid, which is expected once a full verbal agreement in place.
Could be a matter of hours/days, but Guimarães will fly to La Manga if required.🇧🇷

This was from a @ChrisDHWaugh and @GeorgeCaulkin in 2024, appraising the state of play three years after the takeover — progress in some areas (on pitch) but lacking in others.
Fair to say those concerns have lingered and grown #NUFC

Column on Eddie Howe’s departure from Newcastle United, another summer of transfer turmoil and the growing feeling (growing since 2024) that PIF’s and Saudi Arabia’s interest peaked some time ago.
PSR frustrations a factor, clearly, but far from the only one. Lack of stability and
progress in other areas — beyond what Howe and his team delivered on the pitch, which surpassed most expectations — leaves the entire project looking far less bold and ambitious than it initially appeared #NUFC

New Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle told me about his football philosophy and influences in an exclusive interview from Jeddah for @[email protected].
A knee injury cut short his playing career, but Jaissle used it to his advantage to begin his coaching journey early.
#NUFC fans can expect attacking and aggressive football influenced by Rangnick, Klopp and De Zerbi.
Jaissle was popular at Al-Ahli. Fans protested at his potential departure two seasons ago, forcing a board U-turn, with Jaissle going on to win back-to-back Asian Champions League titles.🏆
🗣️ “My knee injury was a shock. Probably the only advantage of it was that I could start management earlier. I am still young for a coach but have quite good experience already. I would still love to be playing... I kick every ball when given the chance in training! I like to think I'd be in my last season now as a player if I was fit, but that’s life, and I am grateful for the next chapter and the opportunities I have had so far.
“I have had quite a unique coaching path, eventually leading me here to the Al-Ahli job in Saudi Arabia. I have always tried to be authentic as a coach and find my own way.
"Of course, I have influences. Ralf Rangnick played a big part in developing my ideas because I played under him for most of my playing career. And in my youth, I had Thomas Tuchel, so I have followed his principles and career.
"Then there's Jurgen Klopp – I often looked at the transitions he put in place with Liverpool. In possession, I like how Pep Guardiola finds structure and balance. And there's a lot to take from Roberto De Zerbi’s build-up as well.
"And due to my past at both Salzburg and Leipzig, I have this identity in my blood to put stress on the opponent as high up the pitch as possible. I want my teams to play in a really intense and aggressive way. And I want to score goals from offensive transitions.
"I am always refining my style, but essentially, and I know it’s easy to say, we want dominance in all phases of the game. So firstly, controlling the transition phases is important, but you also need to find good solutions in possession, especially now we are often facing a low block.
"When our opponents ‘park the bus’, it’s about being creative and disciplined and finding a good structure to create as many chances as possible without being wild on the pitch. It's a never-ending process because you always need to develop your ideas as a coach without abandoning your roots.
"At Salzburg, I played a 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield. At Al-Ahli, we use a 4-2-3-1 system. You have to adjust to the squad you have as well as the circumstances. For example, the temperature can be a factor. This was a learning process for me, to adapt without losing my principles. I don’t worry too much about the exact formation. It's fluid."

I was not looking forward to this season with all the outgoing players and new manager, but after reading up on #jaissle, maybe it was premature. Who knows. Lately with #NUFC, we could either place top 4 or 17th. Happy to see Barnes get a long term contract. Some new quality players this summer would be nice.

Arsenal in advanced talks for Bruno Guimaraes and are optimistic on striking a deal for north of £75m.
Although #NUFC firmly deny a formal bid, talks ongoing and could move quickly.
As with Christos Tzolis, Arsenal approach to agree a verbal package then formally bid.⬇️

🚨⏳ Newcastle United are in direct talks with Al-Ahli to find an agreement for Matthias Jaissle to become their new head coach.

Season hasn’t even started yet and Newcastle United have suffered a huge loss. Eddie Howe leaving is a major blow. Must be frustrated about the sales - Gordon, Tonali, probably Bruno - and the lack of direction from upstairs. Gutting for Newcastle fans to lose a manager of Howe’s calibre. Who can they get who is better?
Howe will be in demand. If the FA hadn’t given Tuchel a contract extension, Howe would be a shoe-in for the England job. If he wanted it. Howe is so highly regarded within the game that there will also be clubs watching the situation - and the form of their own team and performance of their own manager. #NUFC
-
Agree with every word from @GeorgeCaulkin on Eddie Howe's shock departure from #NUFC.
Howe did an outstanding job. The progress in those first four years was spectacular.
It has also glossed over some major shortcomings at board/ownership level
-
I think #nufc have done well to land Matthias Jaissle. Has done brilliantly in Saudi Arabia, and had already developed a great reputation at Salzburg. Plays fast, vertical football in the Red Bull/Rangnick style. Howe has done a fine job, but feels like cycle had reached the end.

75+5 is incredible money for someone who's 29 before Xmas.
It all depends on how we spend it of course.
He deserves the move and I don't begrudge him it all. He went about it as well as he could've I think.
Every year we look back on players we should've sold the year before.
If we kept him there's no doubt we'd all be talking about turning down this money when he's 30 next year.
Really sad to see him go, he'll always be a legend. This is also on PIF for not keeping promises made.
