Here's one for the "sounds like a great idea, when can we get started" department: "The End of Landlords."
"Where Adam Smith and Karl Marx found common ground was in the idea that everyone’s interests are aligned against landlords: they are an economic deadweight."
Aside from the fact that I’d quibble with the choice of “dead weight” over “economic parasite feeding off renters and the larger labor class,” that seems pretty spot on to me.
Although this article is clearly geared towards the UK, almost everything discussed inside of it applies to every Pig Empire nation with a housing crisis caused by a rentier class buying up all the housing and skimming a passive income off folks with less assets than they have; so pretty much all of them in the so-called West.
The simple truth is that paying developers to build more homes that unhoused people can't afford to buy anyway, isn't going to solve a housing crisis caused by hoarding, and currently would only serve as a type of mass-subsidy to landlords and would-be landlords under capitalism. A far better idea would be to simply purchase (or dare I say appropriate with modest reimbursement) existing housing stock from folks using it for passive income accumulation, and provide those houses to the unhoused. A subsidy to the most vulnerable people in our society sure beats a subsidy to leech landlords both impoverishing renters and driving up the cost of obtaining housing for everyone.
