From Sapporo there are a few different areas you can explore in a day/one night trip. I went to a few of them after finishing my language course. During the language course it felt like every weekend was already full with festivals and other activities or I was still exhausted for the week. So I had to catch up on them afterwards.
I went to Lake Toya, Biei/Furano and Upopoy National Ainu Museum. One trip I did make during my language course was a day trip to Otaru. I liked all of them and think that each one is worth it. More about them in the comments.

Hokkaido was one of the best surprises of our Japan trip. Renting a car was stressful, but it took us to Lake Shikotsu, the Hill of the Buddha, Noboribetsu’s demon-themed hot springs, our first private onsen, and the nearly empty Hōheikyō Dam.
