Re joined after a long #socialmedia cleanse. Only platform that kept me coming back was #youtube. I want #mastodon to do the same and keep me coming back here. #noalgorithm (Didn't mind the #youtubealgorithm

I hear there's another swell of newcomers to the Fediverse / Mastodon. I have no idea what "forkiverse" means, but new people means an opportunity for a reminder:

There is no algorithm here. You see nothing but the posts from accounts and hashtags you follow, and things that those accounts boost.

This means: use the boost button! Liberally! Clicking "favourite" just gives a private thumbs-up to the poster, and has no effect on anything else. The boost button is what makes things happen in the fediverse. It's how you get exposed to new things. It's how you find interesting new people and subjects to follow. It's how you learn fascinating stuff about subjects you didn't know existed from people you don't know, half a world away.

Boost. Boost often. If it's interesting, boost it. If you think others should see it, boost it. If it makes you laugh, boost it.

Boosting isn't rude. It doesn't make you like the bloviating arsehole in that workshop who thinks everyone came to hear the sound of his voice. You aren't monopolizing peoples' feeds, or manipulating them.

We need it. Please boost things!

I appreciate I don't post much here, but it's honestly because I spend so much time scrolling past all the animal photos on my timeline.

The one thing I like about Mastodon is how I've managed to tweak my timeline to serve me rather than the other way round. Political news is muted while pictures of cats, dogs, and squirrels flood my timeline.

Ich frage mich, wann Politik, Medien und Institutionen begreifen, dass ihre Tweets auf Twitter nur von einem kleinen Kreis gesehen werden können. Sinnvoller wäre es, die kurzen Tweets endlich in Tröts umzuwandeln - die kann jeder sehen. Auch ohne Account.

First, you should put all of the #hashtags you're following in your #profile, and follow the people who regularly #toot those hashtags.
Next, follow the people whose toots are frequently boosted by the people you're following (hint: If you see a boosted toot, someone you're following boosted it).
Then, whenever you see a toot that you enjoy, be sure to #favorite, #boost, and #comment on it.
And finally, keep doing all of the above on an infinite loop until your network is large enough to keep you #informed, #connected, #entertained, etc.

Remember, there's #NoAlgorithm here to show you stuff that "it thinks" you might like. You have to #TakeControl of your own destiny here. Leveraging your #CommonInterests with others is a great way to immerse yourself in any new culture, even if you don't actually know anyone there yet. If you're #friendly, #curious, and #engage enthusiastically with people here, you'll find your network growing quickly before you know it.
