Often when we talk about NEETs (young people Not in Employment Education or Training) as a 'problem' they are treated as an amorphous group (although we likely all know young people in this broadly defined group).

Immigration is down, yet Youth Unemployment continues to rise, not that the racists actually cared about the employment or the Economy, it was just an excuse to hate on people who are superficially different from them.

I agree with Teachers that education has become too obsessed with exams (including universities where exams are uses to combat the corrosive use of AI), not least as it results in an anti-humanist education, but blaming schools for not preparing young people for work (and rise in economic inactivity among the young), approaches victim blaming;
the problem reflects the UK's low-wage economy, where workers are seen as a cost & not invested in.

We're told by Labour that they want to help young people develop their skills outside the university environment, by encouraging those not in educational, employment or training (NEETs) to take up places in the more vocationally focussed Further Education (FE) sector; which is all well & good, but once again this expansion is not going to be fully funded.
FE has been under-funded for decades, so all they are storing up is more frustration for NEETs!

As young people not in education, employment or training (NEETs) continues to approach 1m, we need to ansi ourselves (as a society) not only why we are failing these young people, but also what sort of long term consequences there will be for this situation among school leavers - periods of unemployment & social exclusion at this age have a long shadow through the rest of working lives.
We should be doing much more to resolve this crisis!
