I recently got a copy of #AnimalCrossing: Wild World and I couldn’t get past the naming portion of the intro without rolling my eyes. When asked to confirm your name the two responses available are "yes, it’s burly" or "yes, it’s cute" and that determines your character’s gender. It’s so comically stereotyped 😂

I recognize the pointlessness of gendering products. I also buy the pink ones because I like them and I think they're pretty. I don't think I'm hurting anyone by doing that. So maybe I should ease off of the guys who buy bars of gun-scented soap FOR MEN. 3/3

Maybe we should spend less time laughing at men for the way they're marketed to and more time calling out the people who decide to create and perpetuate insecurity and a sense of aggrieved entitlement among men just to sell them products. 2/3

The part of this piece that stuck with me the most was pointing out the different responses we have to needlessly gendered advertising depending on the targets. We blame the marketers for making products pink but the customers for making them gunmetal, camouflage, and tacticool. 1/3
