  1. #Green #NCAP 2025 - #emovotion - #Podcast:

  2. Kolejny test samochodu, w ktorym cala obsluge i system #infotainment sprowadzono do jednego ekranu typu tablet, w dodatku z mocno lagujacym systemem operacyjnym

Jestem ciekaw, kiedy osrodki badajace i dopuszczajace samochody do ruchu oraz okreslajace poziom bezpieczenstwa (np. #NCAP) zaczna to uwzgledniac w testach 🤔

  12. @CrackedWindscreen Unsurprisingly.

#NCAP, as you and I have discussed before at length, has been a prime party in inappropriately expanding the scope, reliability and applicability of their AEB assessments.

All in the interests of providing cover for disinterested auto safety regulators.

#EuroNCAP has **VERY** simplistic AEB assessments that involve child-sized mannequins, by design.

Politicians, if they even need a basis, are going to point to those assessments as a "quick fix".

  13. @EricPaulDennis @CrackedWindscreen A high #NCAP rating may actually point to a problematic system, deceptively.

And NCAP has no ability to quantify that - which is always unacceptable in the context of any #SafetyCritical system.

  14. @EricPaulDennis @CrackedWindscreen The #AEB mandates are problematic because, while there are numerous studies that show downstream safety benefits and the control relationship supports a clear safety case, #NCAP is woefully inadequate to assess these systems - particularly on the matter of phantom breaking (overly sensitive systems).

Vehicles may score well on the very limited and tightly-controlled NCAP assessments, but display troubling characteristics in the field.

  15. @CrackedWindscreen A perfect example of something that #NCAP cannot capture: carscoops.com/2023/06/tesla-mo

The #NHTSA has **zero** clue how many vehicles might be effected by this safety-related, manufacturing defect.

The NHTSA only has “the word” of the automaker, in this case #Tesla.

Unquantifiable visibility on automaker internal processes render NCAP assessments effectively moot.

No sense opining about a frontal crash test rating when the steering wheel might detach suddenly.

  16. @CrackedWindscreen Indeed.

And, sadly, in the US at least, authorities and regulators were more than happy to pin the blame on the foreign automaker in question (which is fine), **but without** effectively making any regulatory robustness changes to **prevent** such issues in the future (which is not fine, obviously).

The #NHTSA and #EPA gaslight the public and play political games in order to avoid ever doing their jobs.

#NCAP is one such gaslighting program.

  17. @CrackedWindscreen Because #NCAP cannot scrutinize the **broader** fitness of, say, the airbag supply chain (or any automotive supply chain) **proactively** and **continuously** - crash testing results are effectively indeterminate, as they only consider a small snapshot in time.

  18. @CrackedWindscreen Yup.

#NCAP program make no sense if there is not rigorous oversight into internal processes.

#EuroNCAP actually (and uniquely), in my view, **pretends** that it is serving such a regulatory function - and that is extremely dangerous to do that.

    The public is being misled.

    #automotive

  19. @mimsical Again, the #NHTSA is not remotely capable of that because, for decades, the NHTSA has hidden behind a "blame the human" dogma and shallow #NCAP assessments (often known as "five-star vehicle ratings").

Focusing on "the math" (an endpoint) with respect to #ADS safety would therefore be familiar ground for the #NHTSA and I do expect them to embrace it - as this article predicts.

But the unique risk with ADS safety is that "the human" can no longer be readily blamed anymore.

  20. @brennansv I have a thread coming up on that soon - on the issues with this #NHTSA data collection program (which I might combine with a criticism of #NCAP “five star” ratings programs).

In short, it is an effectively worthless program given that the “data” collected is unaudited.

But I wish that was the only issue with it.

Maybe I’ll drop a thread tomorrow.

  21. It is just like the lack of effective auto regulation in the US (supposed to be maintained by yet another ineffective US regulator - the #NHTSA) and how #Tesla exploits that via its #Autopilot and #FSDBeta programs.

It is just like #NCAP testing eclipsing what should be proper auto regulation via validation process oversight.

Regulatory “illusions” designed to trick the public into thinking there is a cop on the beat.

  22. It really is a broader problem with #automotive regulators globally.

The #NHTSA collects (unaudited, effectively voluntary) "data" from automakers on automated driving system incidents that they happen to know about...

#NCAP testing "data" is viewed as a substitute for independent scrutiny of automaker validation processes...

Everyone is collecting data, but missing the big picture.

It is simply awaiting catastrophic, avoidable injury and death instead of proactively preventing it.
