@arrrg @benfry But it's a sign of great #NaturalStupidity IMO to think that just because they are good at extracting information from text and producing sufficiently plausible sentences, they are all of a sudden "generally intelligent", will definitely rule the world in a few months, and are used for stupid shit that some 50 year old algorithm could do faster, much more efficiently and even do it correctly the first try.

In times of climate radically changing, the #ECMWF european midrange weather forcast replaces physics based models with models based on automated statistics aka past data aka #ai... I often cite this story re: the Military's first attempt to use computers to spot enemy tanks in reconnaissance photos:

After a 100% success rate in training, they were shocked by a 100% failure rate in real-life field tests. 😵

They eventually figured out that every test photo with a tank in it was taken on a cloudy day, and every photo w/o a tank was taken on a Sunny day.

The computer was simply recognizing dark vs light photos. #AI vs #NaturalStupidity 🤦‍♂️

This is right in line with what I've been saying for about a year now:
