  1. Following #NASFiC, two people whom I know of have tested positive for #COVID, and one other probably has it. Could be more; these are just people who have mentioned it on Discord.

  2. @adriabailton
    Hey y'all!
    It's a bittersweet Monday today.

My beloved truck sits where I had an appointment this afternoon, unwilling to start or be put into neutral, so it can't be towed . . . Ford, you owe me one.

My weekend was great! I was basking in the glow from the lovely Buffalo NASFiC. Great panels, plus a fun poker game (with Phil Foglio!) and other friends all weekend.

  3. #NASFiC in Buffalo had an extensive filk program, with all program items conveniently in the same room. The filkers were mostly from Ontario and the northeastern US, where "northeast" extends as far west as Michigan and as far south as Virginia.

  4. I was checking out of the #Nasfic hotel and the desk clerk was named "Garion". Yes, after the #DavidEddings character. He's a bigger #BrandonSanderson fan, though.

He had no idea what NASFiC was or that it was relevant to his name. Nice kid, though.

  5. @nitpicking Fandom is definitely greying, as younger fans gravitate to anime and comic cons, but you're far from the youngest at this #NASFIC.

  6. In a few minutes, I'll be showing three of my short films at #nasfic and you can watch these films on this hashtag #DilmanShortFilms or via my www.patreon.com/dilstories
Akoota (2019) about a girl who has to save her village from GMO mosquitoes; Kifaro (2020) about a man who sends a drone to assassinate his wife; and Lanyonyo (2024) about a girl who repairs a robot to help her mother with household chores.

  8. I'm at #NASFiC in Buffalo.

In any given room of this con, I will be the youngest, or maybe second-youngest person.

    I'm 62.

It was such a relief to go to breakfast at Public Espresso. The food was average, the coffee surprisingly bad, but I was the *oldest* person there. I don't really want to hang with only my fellow seniors.

  10. Folks heading to #Nasfic - please know about one person in twenty who attended Readercon last week contracted COVID. Please look out for yourselves and on another and mask up!

  13. In about ten minutes I'll be speaking at my first panel in #nasfic Earlier this year I had the pleasure of attending my first ever con in person, and wish I was doing this one physically as well, but hey, the ocean is really big so happy to at least attend virtually.

  15. Yes, I’ve added an autographing slot for certain at Buffalo #NASFIC — come visit me at 1pm on Friday! Don’t have a book? I’ve got my novels, and a few zines, and the ZNB table is nearby if you want the Game On! Anthology.

My whole schedule is here: schedule.buffalonasfic2024.org

  17. I am working on adding an autographing session to my schedule for Buffalo #NASFIC (probably Friday or maybe Sunday). Come visit me, get a book (or bring one you already have!), and chat a while!

  19. Ahhh I admit it, I'm jealous of everyone at #Readercon this year. We leave for #NASFIC on Tuesday and couldn't manage two cons in a row. Next year!

Meanwhile, some of my work is there! Check out the Duck Prints Press table for anthologies, short story zines, and the first Welcome to PHU novel.

  21. The program page for the Buffalo #NASFiC has a link which ostensibly leads to a form for people who want to be in filk & music, but actually leads to the masquerade interest form. I've sent an email to the people running the website asking them to fix this.
    buffalonasfic2024.org/programm

There's a working form for interest in being a program participant, so you can fill that out in the meantime.

  22. Episode 98 is just aboot right, eh? We have a stunt Liz in the form of @klepsydra and a stunt lizard adorning @bohemiancoast’s cover art. We discuss the fan funds, we discuss NASFiC, and we have an excerpt from Sandra’s TAFF report which is most excellent. To cap it all off, @johncoxon squees about A City on Mars by Kelly and @ZachWeinersmith. Listen here! octothorpe.podbean.com/e/98-fi

This is a fascinating conversation ( to me as a US fan). I joined the discussion group to see where it goes and help out where I'm able.

  25. Putting out the call: Are there other #ScienceFiction, #Fantasy, or similar genre conventions who have joined the Fediverse? Let us know!

So far we know of three #Discworld cons, one #StarTrek con, one SF con in Ireland, and the most recent #NASFIC; they're all listed in this post: social.seattle.wa.us/@norwesco

Has anyone else moved over here that we should know about?

One of the other floors goes full children's hospital color theory, with that same color pattern but in red. Downright bloody. #PemmiCon #NASFiC

  30. My reading at #PemmiCon #NASFIC went well! I had 7-8 folks (a pretty good turnout given the small size of the convention and the lateness in the con) and got the following toot from @klepsydra:

  34. Last day at #PemmiCon / #NASFIC . I have a panel at 11:30 in Charleswood B on Writing Support. I assume I am on there to talk about critique groups, as I've been in many. Co-panelists: Mark Painter, Michael Haynes, Christine Taylor-Butler, and Nisi Shawl. Then I have a 1 PM Kaffeklatsche in the Fort Garry room (hotel 3rd floor). It's simultaneous with three others in the same space, including Robert Sawyer's. If anyone is still around this late in the con, please come by and hang out.

Congratulations to Buffalo for winning NASFiC 2024 and for this amazing slate of Guests!

I'm very sad that it's looking unlikely that we'll be celebrating our 30th Anniversary at WorldCon in Glasgow or Buffalo NASFiC

Did my best and connected to the zoom link for my 8:30 panel tonight, but all I got was the "Waiting for the host to let you in" screen. Stuck it out for half an hour trying to find out what was going on, but eventually gave up.

    Hope tomorrow goes better.

  40. #pemmicon @pemmi-con #nasfic If you're wondering where I am, I'm at home in Toronto, really sick with what the doctors are saying is not covid. I messaged the con that I would not be physically attending on Tuesday but got no reply. I've at least got my voice back now so I plan to attend my panels by Zoom if it's technically feasible. My first tonight is the Science Discovery Thunderdome. Hope to (virtually) see you there!

  42. According to Philip John Currie Professor of Palaeobiology, T. rex arms were short (and also their head bones were hollow) to aid balance and speed, allowing a smaller tail to counterbalance for a bipedal stance. Also the arms were small only by comparison — they could press over 700 lbs! #NASFiC #PemmiCon

  44. @pemmicon, when Zoom details become available to us Pemmi-Con members, where will they be? Will they be visible in Grenadine? Will there be a news item at Recent News at main.pemmi-con.ca/?

[Late edit: Pemmi-Con has now amended this situation by causing Grenadine to e-mail out Zoom links to, I assume, attending and virtual members. Hurrah!]

It would also be helpful if the latter section of the con's main Web page were (now) amended to say "For breaking news, check our social media" with links to the Mastodon account (and those billionaire also-ran alternatives).

I am grateful for finding your toot yesterday about Zoom problems, but was surprised there was (and still is) nothing at the con's flagship news location.
