    Your nose doesn't just clean, warm, and humidify air. It is two separate organs working on an alternating cycle. Congestion is caused more by a “nasal erection” than by mucus. If you apply pressure under your left armpit, your right nose will open and vice versa, and that is why your "upper" nostril opens when you roll over — it's not the movement of mucus, it's the pressure of your mattress.
