Some Christmas evening wonder - nacreous clouds over York, casting a moonlight sheen just after sundown. It is hard to discern in these phone photos, but the display was beautiful.

The ghosts of nacreous clouds over the west of Edinburgh this morning.

We saw the most magical sight this morning in Bergen. At first we thought they were daytime Aurora Borealis but it's more likely they were a rare sighting of nacreous clouds, polar stratospheric clouds which form only below -78C and sit 3 x higher than airplane cruising altitude.

They were seen yesterday in parts of UK too

Finally got to see a hint of #NacreousClouds this morning. I had looked yesterday evening, but saw nothing. Ditto this morning. Then @SuperMarielle popped round for coffee and gossip and physically dragged me outside to make sure I looked in the right spot!

Not the best display, or photos, but it was there.

Nacreous Clouds

There's been a lot of them seen from much of the UK the past couple of days, and today I finally got around to seeing them too. Taken on today's lunchtime stroll around the Oak Tree Walk, a beauitful colourful display of nacreous clouds.

A fairly extreme HDR was used, 9 * ±1EV, to capture all the tonal detail.

Beautiful as they are, #nacreousclouds are bad news for the protective ozone layer, helping to destroy ozone molecules. They also only form when the stratosphere is very cold, at temperatures below -80°C. They are being seen widely over northern UK at the moment.

Apologies for the low quality of the pictures, taken on my old phone exactly 7 years ago. Nacreous clouds over Edinburgh, formed after the winter storm at the time pushed clouds in the stratosphere. It sure was a great view from the bus to work.
