I have always preferred cheerfulness to mirth. The latter I consider as an act, the former as an habit of mind. Mirth is short and transient, cheerfulness fixed and permanent. Those are often raised into the greatest transports of mirth who are subject to the greatest depressions of melancholy. On the contrary, cheerfulness, though it does not give the mind such an exquisite gladness, prevents us from falling into any depths of sorrow. I finished #Merriment last week and I can’t stop thinking about it. The loneliness of it all combined with Mack’s loosening grip on reality just hits so hard. The way her friends show up for her (though I don’t think either of those words are right) just feels different than how mental illness is normally portrayed.
