From North Carolina’s Weather Authority on FB: 🌀 Tropical Update: It's Friday, and I'm sure you're hitting the mid-afternoon slump and need a scroll break, so here's my Tropical Update! I am continuing to track Tropical Storm Lala in the Central Pacific Ocean heading towards Hawaii. If it makes landfall as a Hurricane on the Big Island, it would be the first hurricane in the modern era to make landfall there! I posted about it yesterday and had many folks reach out saying they had interests there and greatly appreciated my updates! As of 8AM HST (2PM EST), Lala was 365 miles ESE of Hilo, Hawaii, with winds of 60 MPH, gusts to 75MPH and a pressure of 997 MB.

A Hurricane Warning has been issued for the Big Island of Hawaii, and conditions are expected to deteriorate across the Big Island late tonight into Saturday. Preparations for a Hurricane should be rushed to completion. Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Maui County, including the islands of Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe. Winds over 85MPH+ are expected over the highest elevations of the Big Island, with gusts of 50-70MPH possible in the lower elevations. On the Current forecast track the greatest impacts to Hawaii will be on the Big Island tonight-Saturday night, and into parts of Maui on Saturday into Sunday, with lower impacts for the other islands.

Heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Storm Lala will begin to impact the Big Island today and spread westward across the remainder of the island chain over the weekend. This rainfall will produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain.

Over in the Atlantic, things are not really concerning: Two waves in the Atlantic Main Development Region. The first one 92L, has been killed by dry air and wind shear and went from an 80% chance of development to a 10%, so nothing really expected with that. The wave behind it has a 40% chance and remains not great odds. There are no impacts or concerns expected from the tropics for North Carolina for the next 10-14+ days and likely longer, so go on with your lives! DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
At 200 AM HST (1200 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Lala was located near latitude 16.6 North, longitude 149.3 West. Lala is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph (17 km/h). This
general motion is expected to continue, taking the core of Lala near the Big Island of Hawaii on Saturday and then south of the smaller islands on Sunday.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 60 mph (95 km/h) with higher gusts. Steady strengthening is forecast, and Lala is expected to become a hurricane as it approaches the Big Island.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 275 miles (445 km) from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 997 mb (29.44 inches).

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

WIND: Hurricane conditions are expected on the Big Island of Hawaii by early Saturday, with tropical storm conditions possible in Maui County by late Saturday. Wind speeds atop and on the windward
sides of slopes and mountains are often up to 30 percent stronger than the near-surface winds indicated in this advisory, and in some
elevated locations could be even greater.

RAINFALL: Tropical Storm Lala is expected to produce rainfall totals of 8 to 12 inches across Maui and the Big Island with maximum totals of 25 inches possible across the Big Island. Rainfall totals of 4
to 6 inches with maximum amounts of 8 inches across the remainder of the island chain. This rainfall may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain.

STORM SURGE: The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline. The water could
