  2. The northern site is SE of the later Phoenix site. The northern and southern sites would be looking for water in places where orbital neutron data suggested hydrogen was present (implying water). This plan assumes rovers could travel vast distances, far exceeding the few tens of km our current rovers can drive. Also they would have to move a lot faster than our current rovers to accomplish the mission in a reasonable time. In 2004 this was impossible.

  3. These rover routes are all about 50 to 100 km long, a tall order given that nobody had ever driven a rover on Mars before. The only comparable missions were the Soviet Union's Lunokhods. Lunokhod 2 drove nearly 40 km in 5 months, so these Mars distances might have looked reasonable, but they don't take into account how we drive on Mars. Maybe they assumed automated hazard avoidance would allow long autonomous drives, but we are only just getting there now.

  4. Here are 3 Mars 1984 rover traverses from a Site Studies report to the Mars Science Working Group in 1977. The rover plans look superficially like proposals for our modern rovers like Curiosity, but there are very significant differences. We have breathtakingly high resolution images compared to what they had, plus other data sets (thermal inertia and composition especially). These plans are based purely on geomorphology. There's no looking for clays or carbonates.

  5. This map puts the Viking Rover sites into a global perspective, and shows the next set of possible missions. These were called Mars 1984 and included penetrators (hard landers) and rovers. This work was done in 1977 and for the first time it could use Viking orbiter data to help plan landing sites. The Viking Rover sites used Mariner 9 data and were restricted to locations seen in Mariner 9 high resolution frames. The black dots are interesting...

  6. And two more Viking Rover plans. The top example is in a large channel system, Mangala Valles. The bottom one is on polar layered deposits at 82 south. They probably contain ice and would carry information on past climate fluctuations. There was along gap between Viking and the next surface mission, filled with many mission proposals. We will look at several of them.
