on my trek into the kitchen for a cuppa this mornin’ heard a woman on abc brekky tele talking about drought in Peterborough SA and the difficulties of feeding stock… i am not without sympathy for the livestock, or even the lady wot was on the tele… but these dust storms are not unusual - the photo below from nbc america was 2020

at the risk of sounding like a cracked record… SA is the driest state in the driest inhabited continent… and in 1860s an SA government surveyor named goyder said something like <yeah, nah, not enough reliable rainfall> but did they listen? SA is now littered with ghost towns like the hubristically named <farina>

i mean, that great berk burke expired in SA in 1861 for want of water (and okay, also because instead of letting the Indigenous people help him he took a shot at one). if we don’t learn the lessons of history, and all that.

we’ve destroyed australia’s most significant river system, then dicked about for years pretending we want to fix it. the morrison fires of 2020 were NOT just ✌🏻more of the same✌🏻

there are more extreme instances of flout and drudding rains than in the past… when my mother sat on her father’s shoulders to watch victoria burn in 1939, people were fighting the fires with wet sacks, shovels and rakes, and many people had little water at home except what was in a rainwater tank. the state was in a deep economic depression and no one had trucks or motorised vehicles.
(i think at that stage my mother had never even had a ride in a motor car. One of my uncles bought pnematic tyres for his horse drawn buggy in the 1950s and people laughed at him.)

the more things change etc — technology will not save us from ourselves

is this where we use the hashtag #MakeAustraliaGreatAgain?
