If you want a definitive, classic biography, Ada's Algorithm: How Lord Byron's Daughter Ada Lovelace Launched the Digital Age by James Essinger is also fantastic.

For computing history, absolutely check out The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage by Sydney Padua.

It is a brilliantly researched graphic novel packed with historical footnotes, primary sources, and early computer logic that follows the "Enchantress of Numbers" herself. It even features an alternate universe where they build the Analytical Engine.

  5. Always striking to see how multi-faceted some of the great scientists of the past were ( #Gauss, #Faraday, #Maxwell, #Newton, #Somerville, #Lovelace etc.). The boundaries between disciplines were much more fluid back then, and the same person could contribute to multiple fields, even though they might be remembered for only one today.

  13. Okay, here it is. This is the unofficial official timeline of #AI. I'm going to tell you what to expect, and it's definitely not: this all goes away and we return to before.

Are you ready for this? Are you sure? Well, read on.

Before I continue, I'm going to lay out some AI #benchmarks that we'll use to define "how good / scary is this AI?" This is in rough order of difficulty.

#Lovelace #Test for #Emergence: "Can a system produce surprising and useful outputes that weren't explicitely programmed via weak emergence?"

#Loebner Test: "Can a computer fool casual human judges in text conversations?" ( #Modern #LLM AIs are close to this )

#Turing Test (Original Imitation Game): "A man or a computer and a woman are both answering text interrogations trying to convince them that they are the woman. Can the computer perform as well as the man?" (This was the actual orginial #TuringTest.)

Strengthened #Imitation Game: "A man or a #computer and a woman are both answering text interrogations. Can the computer perform as well as the woman?"

#Coffee Test: "Can a #system enter a strangers house with no prior infor and using #perception, imitation, and #reasoning figure out how to make a cup of coffee?"

#College #Student Test: "Can a robot enroll in college, attend classes like an actual student, learn from the instructions things it didn't know before, and graduate?"

#VoightKampff Test: "Can a machine withstand adversarial exper interrogation and still pass as #human?"

#Harnad's Total Turing Test: "Is the system indistinguishible from humans in every aspect?" (This is a #DuckTest.)

Non #Duck Test: "Even with full access to internals, can experts find no evidence that it isn't a genuine human mind?"

  19. Home Assistant gauge card – manually defined colours

This post fits to #TIL (Today I learned) category.

The ‘normal’ way to define colours in a ‘gauge’ card is by defining severity from UI gauge settings. There are only 4 colours available in a sequence: blue, green, yellow, red:

Standard colours are defined using UI by turning on ‘define severity‘ and then entering thresholds for green, yellow, red:

But what if I want to define my own colours (e. g. green-yellow-orange-red)? Sometimes these colours doesn’t visually well represent the sensor value.

Firstly I wanted to define themes but because it didn’t work in a first try, I gave up.

Then I found out that Home Assistant gauge card help offers definining manual ‘segments’ for gauge card. So I switched to manual editing of a gauge and defined segments:

cards: - type: gauge entity: sensor.ikea_vindstyrka_airquality_01_voc_index needle: true max: 500 name: VOC index - organske spojine segments: - from: 0 color: green - from: 150 color: yellow - from: 250 color: orange - from: 400 color: red

For me it was easier than defining and editing ‘themes.yaml’. Maybe I’ll use frontend themes next time.

not only was #lovelace the world's first #programmer, she was also the first #AI detractor

and i know that because the first non-#sciencefiction proponent of AI, #alanturing, cited her in his defense of/ argument for AI

#turing framed the foundational thoughts of the entire field of AI, as an argument against ada's thoughts

and she lived many decades before turing!

    #adalovelace was an amazing woman

she deserves her own hollywood movie

  23. @ajaykaul10 @RIDDLES Turing was the original proponent, as you say, but decades before Turing there was the original detractor of #AI: #Lovelace. And Turing seemed to be grumpy about it.

Lovelace, Lord Byron's daughter, was an amazing progenitor. She needs her own damn movie. I find her fascinating.

Apparently her mother was worried about her developing her father's excesses, and steered her upbringing to mathematics, away from literature. It paid off.

'We do not know how Turing came across Lovelace's notes. But he devotes a significant portion of his 1950 paper to countering what he calls "Lady Lovelace's objection" and he quotes her verbatim.'

We do have to honor the father of computing, #Turing, but we can't forget to honor the mother of computing, Ada #Lovelace. He framed his thoughts on #AI against her thoughts. So he certainly honored her.

  27. Two years after attaching the shelf to the wall #Lady #Ada #Lovelace finally has taken it as a resting place. 💤

Having moved my bed under the shelf might have made her more accepting.

I moved my bed into the only room tall enough for a ceiling fan. The fan makes hot summer nights in a badly insulated attic flat bearable. 🥵

And now she guards my sleep :blob_rainbowheart:

Please read my pinned post about someone in need.

  29. CW: cat eye contact, alcohol

(have I posted this image before?)

#Lady #Ada #Lovelace says that one cold beer is enough and I should give her treats.

What she doesn't say is that she just barfed on the floor in the bed room; we shall find out later though.

I can recommend putting a light behind the monitors so you don't feel so blinded when looking away from the bright display.

  32. CW: cat picture, direct eye contact albeit through half-closed eye lids

Today is BY FAR the hottest Saturday this week. Weather app promises up to 33°C, which is quite high for June.

#Lady #Ada #Lovelace spends this day doing as little as possible.

Here she is, bearing the sheer discomfort.

I sneaked up on her sleeping form, but she opened her eyes a bit *just* as I was taking this photo.

Remember to hydrate. Watch your friends, feline and otherwise.

  33. CW: resting cat, no eye contact

When it's warm, #Lady #Ada #Lovelace likes to snuggle up against me.

She stole my wrist pad and received EXTENSIVE but gentle belly brushing in return.

It was still 28°C and I don't know why she wants to keep me warm 🥵 As I write this, she has draped herself over my arm, making sure it become nice and sweaty...

Remember to hydrate yourself and your friends!

  34. CW: cat-ish picture, only the back is visible, no eye contact

She has got 5 cat beds throughout her apartment. But #Lady #Ada #Lovelace prefers to snooze in a moving carton where I put my discarded sweaters.

As if it wasn't hot enough already! 🥵

    #CatsOfMastodon #FediCats

    ----
I turn old clothing into rags for my workshop: cut into pieces, use, and only then discard. I try to give the sweaters away beforehand.

  35. When #Lady #Ada #Lovelace wants belly rubs, she walks in front of me and starts a somersault. That sault turns into a flop to the side, upon which you see this pose.

It is goofy but so very cute!

  36. CW: cat on desk, eye contact

#Sir #Alan #Turing is watching me fulfill orders from our customers[0]. Well, the order is fulfilled so he actually watches me scrolling my great home timelime.

His fur is very smooth from the daily dose of milk he slurps with his heart medication. He is very cuddly, until he suddenly decides otherwise.

Alan used to be house mate of my beloved #Lady #Ada #Lovelace, but they weren't good friends.

  38. Ada Lovelace Day 2012

    shkspr.mobi/blog/2012/10/ada-l

Last night, I attended Ada Lovelave Day Live. An inspirational and entertaining evening celebrating women in technology.

One of the ways that people can get involved in Ada Lovelace day is be blogging about women in tech - I blogged in 2009 and 2010 but - to my shame - I didn't in 2011.

So, here is a double post in penance :-)

    Mary Anning (21 May 1799 – 9 March 1847)

First up, Mary Anning. I was in the British Museum yeasterday, they have a wonderful collection of fossils. The most impressive of which were discovered and reconstructed by Marry Anning in the early 19th century.

In a sense, she was the driving force behind fossil hunting. She helped change the way we think about history, evolution, extinction, dinosaurs, and life.

She is celebrated in museums, and in Tracey Chevalier's marvellous fictionalised account of her life Remarkable Creatures.

Mary risked her life hunting fossils - for her it was as much about business as it was science - but her hard work and dedication paid off and she is rightly credited as having discovered several new species of dinosaur, including the plesiosaurs.

Despite her tremendous discoveries and contributions to the science, she was barred from many prestigious scientific societies - although they were happy to use her work.

    Vi Hart

I only discovered the works of Vi Hart last week. She self describes as a "Mathemusician". She has an amazingly friendly and accessible way of describing maths - as this video shows

Even though I'm unlikely to have to take my GCSE in maths again any time soon - watching her videos has really helped me understand some of the everyday maths that I use.

Check out Vi's website, Twitter Feed, and her YouTube channel

Finally, watching these videos on hexaflexagons. They will BLOW YOUR MIND!
