"Here we develop an emulation framework for a much more complete economic valuation of climate risks. We apply it to the UK, which provides a test case because of the availability of many estimates from models and expert elicitations. The approach provides channel-specific estimates, quantifies climatic and socioeconomic uncertainties, disaggregates to 406 local areas and crucially includes understudied impacts such as spillovers from other regions and missing risks. Although current warming produces welfare losses equivalent to 2% of gross domestic product (95% confidence interval of 1–4%), damages grow rapidly under the baseline scenario and reach 10% of gross domestic product (2–20%) by the end of the century. We demonstrate half the expected total damages and the greatest uncertainties come from catastrophic and missing risks."

Now wouldn;t it be appropriate to revoke the operating permits from companies that reneg on promises like this? And hold the C-suite personally liable for damages that they know (or should know) their actions will cause?

"A warning I constantly make: as climate activists, we must denounce how frames of national sovereignty/interest are used not only to advance fossil fuel operations, but also to persecute and slander climate justice points and advocates.
“cross-verification of filings made by the remitters abroad indicates that the funds were actually intended to promote the agenda of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty (FF-NPT) within India,”
India is treating a peaceful treaty initiative as a security threat and judicial threat.
As one of the champions of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty initiative, I see this with grave concern. The treaty initiative is careful, follows diplomatic routes and intends to help countries with just transition and prosperity beyond fossil fuels. The point is to cooperate, not threaten.
The Indian government also seems to be pursuing routes similar to Trump’s slandering of NGOs and philanthropy involved in climate (which he almost managed to dismantle last year). To target climate consultants getting money from NGOs that also get money from specific funders is a big leap."

The #LossAndDamage negotiations are expected to conclude today at #COP30. The decision must align with States' obligations to: ⭕️Prevent climate harm; ⭕️Provide reparations for climate-related harm & ⭕️Uphold #HumanRights in #ClimateAction. Yet, States seem to have forgotten it.

Ich kenne keinen besseren zusammenfassenden Text zur Klima-Ungerechtigkeit und zu einer wirksamen Politik gegen die voranschreitende Klimakrise als den neuen Climate Inequality Report (Chancel et al., 2025). Knapp und mit verständlichen Infografiken stellen Lucas Chancel, Cornelia Mohren und ihre Mitarbeiter:innen am World Inequality Lab die aktuellen Daten zu den Beziehungen zwischen unterschiedlich verteiltem Reichtum und Treibhausgas-Emissionen dar. Ausgehend von dieser Darstellung formulieren sie politische Maßnahmen gegen die Klimakrise. Diese Maßnahmen halte ich für die Basis eines Konsenses aller politischen Kräfte, die die globale Erhitzung wirksam bekämpfen wollen: ein Verbot aller Investionen in zusätzliche fossile Energieträger, eine Besteuerung von Vermögen, die sich an der Verursachung von Emissionen durch Konsum und vor allem durch Investitionen orientiert, massive, vor allem durch Steuern finanzierte öffentliche Investitionen in die Dekarbonisierung im Sinne des Pariser Abkommens. Die aktuelle Klimapolitik in Europa – ganz zu schweigen von den USA – ist weit von diesen Maßnahmen entfernt. Sie orientiert sich viel mehr an den Interessen der Allerreichsten als an dem Ziel, die globale Erhitzung aufzuhalten. Auf diese macht- und geopolitische Dimension der Klima-Ungerechtigkeit geht der Climate Inequality Report nur indirekt ein. […] -

At the request of the UN General Assembly, the #ICJ will determine the existing financial liability of countries for their contribution to #ClimateChange and what actions countries must take to prevent climate change. The advisory opinion, while non-binding, could set a new standard for climate litigation."
