  22. The 1980 Republican hunger strike at Long Kesh Prison, and other prisons in Northern Ireland, which had happened on 27th October 1980 was called off on 18th December 1980. This was following the appeal by Catholic Primate of Ireland, Tomás Ó Fiaich, on 17 December 1980. The strike had lasted for 53 days.

  23. The Maze Prison escape took place on 25 September 1983. HM Prison Maze (also known as Long Kesh/An Cheis Fhada) was a maximum security prison considered to be one of the most escape-proof prisons in Europe. In the biggest prison escape in British history, 38 IRA prisoners escaped from H-Block 7 of the prison. One prison officer died of a heart attack during the escape and twenty others were injured.
