Doing a last minute Lindy Hop set next Monday at Hot Jam, come dance to my tunes (free beginner lesson and warm up before the dance)!

Now taking suggestions for Lindy Hop-able swing tracks that I might want to use! The dancers at this event tend to prefer OG swing stuff from the late 30s through the early 50s or so, or modern stuff imitating the old stuff (they generally don't like electro-swing).

Recommendations needed: either really good swing dance tunes that you can do Lindy Hop to, or (totally unrelated to swing, it's for something else) pop/rock/etc. tunes that folks would know that are at dance tempo (~110-120 bpm ± 10% or so, they can be adjusted without sounding too weird) that I can mix to make them danceable.

In particular I have a contra dance set on Tuesday and I'd like to find one more pop-y thing to mix in that folks would know. But also I'd like to find some new stuff for my Lindy Hop set next month.

Why are there no Swing bands that use a hammer dulcimer? I feel like you could do a lot of Lionel Hampton on hammer dulcimer and it would give it a fun twist if you did it in a respectful way that acknowledges the history of the dance and the music.

–sn–

Wrote a little blog post about my attempts at making creative tech, making things because we can, and imagining a future where that is more common, than it consuming us : https://blog.nicoleta.cc/creative-tech-sagamaking-a-programmable-led-skirt/

May or may not include some lower-intermediate Lindy Hop dancing too.

If you work in/with new media, interactive technologies, human-computer interaction, or as a creative technologist, and would like to spare some time for a chat, it would really help me out :)

Hopperz Bootcamp | JILL & ALEX BY THE SEA

https://tricity.dance/event/hopperz-bootcamp-or-jill-and-alex-by-the-sea

Sound people who know more than me: I'm considering applying for a grant to help a local dance buy a mixer for when they have live bands, probably in the $400-$700 range, though there may be an option to go slightly over if necessary.

Requirements:

- Portability is good (but not a strict requirement)
- We'd like the ability to record digitally and have digital returns (class-compliant or with Linux support since I'm the one who will do this mostly)
- At least one sub-mix for rear fill speakers (or some other way to do this) and/or for large bands
- Can't require a closed source iPad only app or what not (my own personal requirement or I'd just get a Behringer x16 or what not which seems basically perfect)
- Prefer real fades and knobs (this is a hill I personally will die on, but not a hard requirement for this group)
- USB to digitally record stems + the stereo mix

Tascam Model 12 is my current thought. Other suggestions?

„I would argue #Lindy Hop is crucial to understanding #Jazz. It is intimately connected to Jazz music–to its development, to its appeal, and to its popularity. The way that people made sense of Jazz music for at least 30 of its most crucial years is by #dancing. The dancing co-evolved with the music and I would argue the pinnacle of that evolution was reached in the Lindy Hop.“ - Skye Humphries

Today, at a swing social:

Him: aren’t you exhausted from wearing a mask?
Me: yes (thinking: mostly b/c ppl make such dumb remarks about it)
Him: I think it’s part of your style. Do you wear it everywhere?
Me: er?
Him: like in bed? Do you wear it in bed? You should!
Me: 👁️👄👁️

I did ask if he was implying that I was probably quite ugly, but he said no.
