Wow, I paused this viewing for a very long time! It was so emotionally intense that I just didn't have capacity to finish. But Hulu expires tomorrow, so I'm catching up on the remaining hour.
They get into the feminism aspect, and the backlash, and the impact the fair had on the music industry, most of which I had no idea. The fair was a star-maker, with the careers of Jewel, Shawn Colvin, and many others basically being made by the tour. These acts swept the Grammys as a bloc. It was girl power in action. One of many ways powerful activism can manifest.
Anyone who didn't live through that as an adult, who wants to understand the zeitgeist of the 90s, GenX attitudes, and some of the context of today's social justice, might appreciate really appreciate watching it.
I know the words to at least half the songs played in this documentary, because this music was on the radio constantly, and much of that exposure and success was simply because Sarah McLachlan decided to make a women-only music festival. That music affected me deeply, and without it, I might never have escaped religious fascism.
And oh how my heart aches that I decided not to go. And that society somehow lost this. Sorrow for what could have been.

Next up are the legendary Indigo Girls AKA Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, who like Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan, performed on all incarnations of the festival. This is their NPR Tiny Desk concert from 2023 (https://youtu.be/vw-DLcZBfq0?si=i0DT4wKg5Xawv3Yc)

Shawn Colvin would go on to win both Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Sunny Came Home”. BUT Paula Cole and Sarah McLachlan would also go home having won multiple Grammys that night

There’s also a really well made Lilith Fair concert DVD but musically it’s kind of homogenous and VERY un-diverse. Despite that, it’s still a pretty good watch. You can check that out here (https://youtu.be/HT1WyL2mCsc?si=WnEiNujbPW076SOc)

If you haven't watched Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery on Hulu yet then make it appointment viewing tonight. I am grateful I could explore both the making of the documentary with producer Cassidy Hartmann and to get more insight on the festival's historical -- and revolutionary -- context with none other than Paula Cole herself.
Read about it now on The Bluegrass Situation!

The Atlantic: The Hard-Won Lessons of Lilith Fair
"Pankiw cuts to scenes of young women watching and smiling with the unselfconscious radiance of oil-painted saints. But there are also plenty of men in the audience, and attendees wear not just tie-dye, but also Adidas and Gold’s Gym T-shirts. The idea propagated by Saturday Night Live skits and sitcom one-liners that Lilith Fair was a misandrist showcase for joyless, hormonal angst was totally alien to accounts of what being there actually felt like."

K I have to take a break. Too intense! Too much nostalgia, too many of my favorite artists, too much singing along, too much wishing those fashions had never gone out of style.
-
My goosebumps are getting sore.
So their first Lilith Fair was at The Gorge in Eastern Washington.
That's the venue I would have gone to the following year. I've been to a couple of shows there, so there's that feeling of place, with all the familiar music.
Energizing.

It's hard to convey now how influential and important music was to culture in the 90s.
Everything centered around music.
Everyone heard the same music.
Subcultures were defined by what music they listened to and refused to listen to.
A female voice on the radio singing about what it's like to exist as a woman, that was going to affect a lot of people.
🧵
-
It was 1998, tickets were $35 for the weekend, I would have had to find a sitter, I didn't have anybody to go with, and at 24, I thought everything that existed would exist forever... I'd just go another year, thought I.
Lilith Fair is the concert I most regret missing.
Every one of my most favorite artists, some for which I owned multiple CDs, was there.
I want to cry hearing Sarah McLachlin talking about her childhood and wanting to be a musician. (I did too.)
It's capturing the zeitgeist of feminism in the 90s really well. It was the kind of feminism that didn't typically fly the "feminism" flag, but simply lived and promoted Girl Power, paving roads, reaching kids like me who had been raised sheltered and suspicious of the word feminism.
My generation doesn't get much credit, because the changes we made were unassuming. But look at the work we did. On ourselves, and on the culture.

The prompt is ProveTara MacLean, “Evidence” from Silence, 1996
I was having trouble coming up with something that appealed to me with the literal word “prove” so I ended up going with a vehicle for proving something, evidence.
#TaraMacLean sits on my shelf alongside Caroline Lavelle and (early) Sarah McLachlan: women with vaguely Celtic vocal styles whom I could see draped in crystals and gauze, wind chimes hanging above their doors, and a collection of ethnic percussion instruments waiting within.
I’d like this track a lot more if they’d backed off just a bit on the pop production values, particularly in the choruses, and I can hear a gorgeously stark rendition in my head with just Tara’s voice, acoustic guitar, and one or two people using some of those ethnic percussion instruments lying around (I tried but couldn’t find a performance like this), but it’s still a lovely, moody song.

Awesome find on spotify today. 🎵
Nettwerk's Broken Glass compilation was created in response to the Supreme Cunts overturning Roe v Wade. :dickbutt:
All covers of all-female 90s music! ❤️
It was rolled out weekly as double singles last year, then released this year as the complete compilation.
