  1. 40 Little Sayings That Have Held Up Over 40 Years

I've been around for a full 40 years now. I, like everyone on Earth, still have no real idea about what's going on here. But! I have been picking up little "heuristics" (aka "sayings that make decisions simpler") to try to make slightly better models for navigating the world. Many have been wrong. I've tried to discard those (like "just work hard" is a very incorrect heuristic). But, there are 40 heuristics* that still seem to be true...so far. Also, these are sayings I tell myself. I'm […]

  16. If like me, you suddenly feel sleepy right around 11:30 AM, take a nap instead of going wild on caffeinated drinks. When you take this nap, the rest of the day you will be energetic and ready to tackle everything. You can enjoy your coffee/tea after this sleeping session. This way, you'll see that you won't even crash that hard when the caffeine levels drop. Its truly amazing!
This has been my own personal experience; I hope it helps someone increase their productivity.

  18. Hints:
You are responsible for other people's feelings when their feelings are a result of your actions.
Your public figure is more important than you realize; even a lack of strict rules doesn't mean you should do and say anything you want.
Last but not least: People might not notice you as much as you think they do, but that means when they do notice you, you've done something noticeable and that's the kind of thing people tend to remember. Try to be noticed the best way you can.

Those deep-rooted beliefs about who we are and how we perceive ourselves in the world and where we place ourselves in the world can keep us feeling stuck in this Perception Box about how we see ourselves—and not only that—how we think other people interpret us as well. It could be we are a sporty one or a creative one, or that perhaps we […]

Get addicted to a video game and set an alarm at 5 am to play it. It's so unreasonably effective. I have also been using it as a reward to get boring tasks done. 😆

  31. @thegibson If you grabbed a newer car for some reason that may or may not transmit telemetry. For now, if you gank the head unit out you can pull the sim out and it can't talk over the network.
If you want to take it a step further and have the skill you can look at the head unit and short the antenna also.
The sim trick I suspect won't be a thing for much longer though since eSIM is pretty proved out now, and it is a US federal safety requirement that cars have DCIM communication built in and because of that car makers got a taste of the forbidden money.

  34. Reposting due to the big convention weekend: How to be masked and still heard in a crowd.  (1) valved N95 Mask. (1) personal voice amp with mic stalk.  (1) cloth mask & a mask holder ( both neckband or headband style works).  Put on N95. Put the microphone by the exit valve.  Put on the cloth mask over it to "pin" it in place. Adjust the cloth mask straps on the extender to tighten as needed.  Note portable amps range $35 - $175 USD.  #lpt #LifeProTips #Cosplay #MasksSaveLives #dragoncon #Pax

  36. Procrastinators with a terrible sleep cycle, listen up! I'm fixing my sleep cycle using procrastination, and its working

    Here's what happened:

I had been trying to "fix" my sleep cycle for years, but only made it worse. Every day, I would try to make myself go to bed earlier or wake up later than I wanted. Sometimes, I would try to book appointments earlier in my day to force myself to wake up early. I would wake up earlier, but then be sleep-deprived and sleep later the next day. All my efforts only made everything worse, and last week, I was waking up at 5pm to start my day. I finally said enough is enough, and it was time to try something new.

Since any plans that deprived me of sleep didn't work, I had to go the other route. I decided to finally utilize my ultimate skill: procrastination.

On Tuesday, I slept for as long as I could. Instead of waking up at 5pm, I woke up at 8pm I stayed awake as long as was feasible, putting off going to bed. I went to bed 5 hours later than normal. The next day, I did the same. I woke up even later, and went to bed even later. By now, I had gone from experiencing 1 hour of sunlight a day to 9 hours. What a relief! I was essentially living life as if a day was 28 hours, not 24. I procrastinated going to sleep and waking up in the morning until, after 5 days, I had procrastinated myself into waking up at 8 a.m. like a normal person. It's a miracle!

I don't know if it will stick yet. I'll have to update you on that. But so far, I've made the most progress I've ever made in this.

    Some things to note:

    1. I am not working right now. That makes this a lot easier. That said, no longer working is part of why things got so bad.

    2. This process felt a lot like jet lag, minus the stress of actually traveling. I felt incredibly hungry all the time, felt quite anxious, and pretty unsettled (that might be the autistic need for routine). Nothing too bad, certainly much less stress than weeks of getting one hour of daylight a day. But it was stressful.

    3. I need a lot of sleep due to my chronic fatigue. I average 10 hours a night. Through this experiment, I was doing 11-14 hours. I imagine this would take a lot longer if you usually only need 7 hours.

    4. I did have one false start. Last weekend, I tried it, and at the time I usually would sleep, I decided to "take a little nap" which just turned into regular sleep. I would recommend avoiding naps if that's likely to happen to you. But maybe you have more self-control than me.

I'll report how the next week goes. I haven't woken up at 8am with a full night's rest in ten years. I hope this helps someone else who is struggling with a terrible sleep cycle!

  37. The weirdest 'lifestyle change' item I've bought recently is an extra brightly coloured stiff dustpan and brush, just for my bedroom floor.

I clean a bit of floor instead of dragging out the hoover and making the whole thing an ordeal. It's amazing how much more you can do with a clean floor to drop things on. Well, now the floor is clean more than about an hour every two weeks.

It's also amazing how rapidly crud propogates itself as soon as you turn your back.
