I saw Kokuho 国宝 at the closing gala of the London East Asia Film Festival tonight. I sometimes struggle with long films, but this really earns its 3 hour running time.
You could probably enjoy it even if you weren't interested in Kabuki, but there's a lot of it, so having a least a passing interest in it helps.
