I've been out scouting for Downy Mildew after two rain events within a week and it's been overcast since. Lo and behold - new infections on leaves. This is on young Syrah, but I've seen it in all the other blocks I've checked so far - Cinsault, Carignan, Merlot. I'm thinking to apply some copper to protect these leaves, as we still have lots of time for photosynthesis before the first frost...

Visit to Noilly Prat, vermouth producer in Marseillan. Fascinating history and process for making the beverage. Pictured here are barrels kept outside where some of the fortified (16%) wine is stored for a year, without topping. This is to simulate ship transport (part of this is that salt from the Mediterranean Sea makes its way to the barrels). In hot weather they are sprayed with water to keep the wood from drying out.

The terrible fires in the south of France (and neighbouring countries) have consumed tens of thousands of hectares, many homes, and also people's livelihoods.

One estimate puts up to 900 ha of vines in the Corbieres AOP burned, but there are also the smoke tainted grapes, which are not covered by insurance.
