Had fun at the #eugene #pride #festival at the #LaneCounty Fairgrounds today with my partner and our granddaughter. Many kiosks visited, crafts crafted, swag swagged, food consumed, toys purchased, and so forth. Nap time now!

Was out on a remote ridge in the coast range with a few members of the #astronomy club last night. We found the #nova in Lupus and had settled in for a joyous night of observing despite pesky clouds.
We saw some headlights and heard a vehicle on the gravel access road a few hundred yards away to the West. A few minutes later we noticed a light colored cloud close to the ground which turned orange and was fed by a pillar of #fire, growing rapidly. Jerry called 911 to report precise location and particulars. We quickly packed up our telescopes and left. Some of the group stopped where the gravel road branches off from the highway to talk with the three fire department units that were dispatched from #Veneta to the site.
According to the #Eugene / #LaneCounty fire call log, the brush fire was cleared. I am so grateful that professional fire crews were able to stop this before it became a #ForestFire. I wonder what percentage of our wretched summer #smoke events in #Oregon are intentionally human caused.

There is a fast-moving wildfire just north of Penn Lake. Everyone in that area should leave immediately. -
Uh oh, Lane County issued level 3 evacuation an area just North of Mackenzie Bridge along OR126 due to the Lookout fire. 350 personnel assigned to fight this one, but heavily forested and mountainous so treacherous and slow going. Not in a highly populated spot but there are homes at immediate risk. Lane County's website is down so there is no official evacuation map. Reached out to birdsite account of Lane County Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD) - http://www.preparelane.org/ - and pointed out that since there are local Mastodon servers they might want to set up an account which would survive some of our likely disaster scenarios. (I doubt we would lose *all* Internet to the rest of the world, but losing major connections would still make local servers preferable.)

The part of Oregon state I live in right now has been called Lane County, after a guy Joseph Lane whose pro-slavery views didn't even represent local values at the time.
What if we changed the name to honor the peoples who long lived and loved this land?
