De l’art de l’éphémère et du recyclage au Japon.
Chaque automne, dans la préfecture de Niigata, au nord du Japon, se célèbre l’abondance de la récolte du riz avec le Wara Art Festival (わらアートまつり), un festival de l’art de la paille aussi spectaculaire que surprenant, à l’occasion duquel des tonnes de résidus issues des récoltes de riz sont transformées en immenses sculptures.
« Des éléphants imposants aux créatures mythiques espiègles, chaque sculpture est soigneusement réalisée (...). Nichés au cœur des rizières pittoresques de Niigata, ce festival met en avant le développement durable en transformant des résidus agricoles en œuvres d’art inspirantes. Exemple parfait de la manière dont la créativité peut tout à la fois célébrer la culture et sensibiliser à la protection de l’environnement » (Street Art Utopia).
L’histoire du festival débute en 2006, lorsque des habitant⋅e⋅s de Niigata décident de donner une seconde vie à la paille de riz. Avec l’appui de la Musashino Art University, les premières sculptures géantes voient le jour en 2008. Depuis, chaque automne, étudiants en art et bénévoles locaux travaillent main dans la main pour réaliser des œuvres monumentales éphémères, mêlant technique de l’artisanat ancestral et créativité artistique contemporaine.
