Another painful blast of Arctic air will follow a midweek East Coast rainstorm and the frigid air will set off a few more feet of lake-effect snow in some towns.

"The same storm that will soak areas from the Appalachians to the Atlantic coast will have snappy cold on the back side that will not only have tens of millions reaching for midwinter coats but will also bury some Great Lakes towns knee-deep in the snow all over again, AccuWeather meteorologists warn.
"Most travel problems in the East into Wednesday evening will be related to heavy rain, strong winds and fog. The storm producing the downpours will strengthen enough to pull Arctic air southeastward in a hurry from the Midwest to the Northeast.
"As the trouble-causing storm begins to move northward from the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday, Arctic air will begin its move into the United States over the northern Plains. On Wednesday, the Arctic air will be blasting across the the Midwest with subzero AccuWeather RealFeel Temperatures and stiff northwesterly winds."

A blast of Arctic air associated with a storm from Canada is still causing trouble on some roads downwind of the eastern Great Lakes as bands of snow continue and shift around.

"Even as the Canadian storm that triggered intense lake-effect snow and heavy snow squalls and brought the first flakes of the season to much of the Interstate 95 Northeast is moving away, shifting Arctic breezes will cause lingering bands of lake-effect snow to shift around into Saturday off lakes Erie and Ontario, AccuWeather meteorologist say.
"Lake-effect snow, which began around midweek, brought a fresh few feet of snow to some Great Lakes communities on top of the snow that fell last weekend. Far-reaching snow squalls quickly covered roads and triggered scores of accidents and road closures in the region.
"While the worst of the lake-effect has passed, some lingering bands in upstate New York and northwestern Pennsylvania will still make travel slippery."

Erie County, PA
The Erie Fire Department is urging residents to inspect their high-efficiency furnace vent pipes for snow or ice blockages. Blocked vents can lead to dangerous conditions, including carbon monoxide buildup, furnace malfunctions, and even emergency heating outages.
High-efficiency furnaces rely on exterior intake and exhaust pipes for proper operation. When these pipes become obstructed by snow or ice, the furnace may shut down or operate inefficiently, increasing the risk of carbon monoxide exposure. -

Ooh, this is neat, this traffic camera in Lackawanna is pointing South, and you can see the edge of the lake effect snow (which is a fairly low-elevation phenomenon). Everything under the plume of clouds is getting dumped on, but you can see it's pulling off the lake at the right. Hmm, I-90 is actually closed through the entire stretch of PA. I think you can't even get off the road there. Those folks are going to be there all night. Not a terrible strategy. They're right before hitting the "Pennsylvania Welcome Center", which I imagine is open 24/7. The camera looks to be mounted above or near the Pennsylvania Welcome Sign, so you probably won't die of hypothermia in that stretch if you are wearing proper clothing. And your driver can definitely head that direction. I'd probably park there and wait it out, much better to be at some place with bathrooms and heat than stuck on the freeway. #PAwx #NYwx #lakeeffectsnow
