    Mesoscale Precipitation Discussion 1052
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
    311 PM EDT Fri Aug 14 2026

Areas affected...eastern Kentucky, southern West Virginia, western Virginia, northwestern North Carolina, far northeast Tennessee

    Concerning...Heavy rainfall...Flash flooding possible

    Valid 141910Z - 150010Z

Summary...Scattered thunderstorms will pose a flash flood risk across the central Appalachians and vicinity through at least 23Z/7p eastern.

Discussion...A gradual increase in convective coverage was notedacross the discussion area over the past hour or so, with most storms focused in one band over southern WV and eastern KY (from
near Beckley, WV to near Lexington, KY). The storms are embedded on the southern fringe of appreciable flow aloft (30-40 knot westerly mean steering flow), and while most storms were fairly
progressive, areas of 1.5-2 inch PW values were enabling heavier rain rates approaching 1 inch/hr in a few spots. Ground conditions are wet in a few spots, and with areas of 1-1.5 inch/hr FFG thresholds, it appears that a few areas of flash flooding are possible over the next few hours.

The extent of flash flood potential over the next few hours will depend on convective coverage and degree of mergers. CAMs suggest further upscale growth of the southern WV band of storms with
southeastward extent. These storms should also reach higher PW values east of the Appalachians, though FFG thresholds also increase with eastward extent especially east of I-81/Blacksburg/Roanoke. Instances of flash flooding are possible on a scattered basis, particularly in low-lying areas and
sensitive terrain. Backbuilding/upstream development in central to eastern Kentucky also appears possible through the afternoon, which could prompt another concentrated axis of flash flood potential there (Lexington vicinity eastward to Jackson) through 23Z as well.
