Maybe #KSR tried to tip the scale somewhat toward the reds (posthumously of course, since he killed most of them in action) intending to offset having Mars end up colonized, terraformed and with a new space elevator? Can you imagine him having the reds succeed in their struggle? I suppose he still needed to make a living in the US out of his writing…Besides, there is the inherent contradiction of living on Mars, a very inhospitable planet, but wanting it to remain pristine.

ideological stance. Social conditions may be such in a distant future that may necessitate the expansion of humanity to other (made?)habitable planets. Subsidizing "space economy" for billionaires to build an oligarchy based on hype is not an acceptable reason, even if "the Party" says so.#KSR's novels are political, in the original, Aristotelian meaning of the word 'politics'. This piece discusses the potential of #utopian #scifi to shape the world:

Ah, yes, Charitum Montes. John Boone flew there in a glider from the town Senzeni Na (meaning, "what have we done?" in Japanese), to talk to Ann Clayborne, after someone (maybe from the Reds?) attempted to assassinate him in a mohole near Senzeni Na.The maps show that flight on top of the georeferenced Tianwen-1 image 🙃

Coyote sent word he's coming to Jezero Crater in one of his boulder cars. #Perseverance is doing its best to break his invisibility cloak and see him approaching … 🙃

“he posits something similar, yet uses it as the backdrop for a much bleaker & in many ways more distressing portrait of the way our fantasies about progress & scientific possibility blind us to the human & environmental costs of our actions” #books #climate-change #KSR fivebooks.com/best-books/c...

"New results in biology indicate that the #SciFi idea of the multi-generational starship, which is already the only realistic way for humans to cross interstellar distances, will not work, because any closed biological life-support system will be too small to function over the centuries required.
[…]
So at this point, it’s important to point out that the idea of humanity going to the stars is a fantasy and is not going to happen."#KimStanleyRobinson interview: https://www.terrain.org/2016/interviews/kim-stanley-robinson/

Hiroko said, “Net gain in beauty.”
Arkady said, “Net gain in freedom.”
And then they all stared at Ann. [...] and all she could do was point a shaking finger at them and say, “Mars. Mars. Mars.”

In June 2024, Kim Stanley Robinson was invited to the University of Oxford at the Hertford College for the official launch of the "Oxford Ministry for the Future" (OMF), which hopes to amplify voices for a sustainable political economy of the future.
The inaugural event featured Kate Raworth (author of Doughnut Economics) and #KimStanleyRobinson alongside some very, very interesting panelists.
Here is that event:

According to #TheStorygraph I've passed 20,000 pages read this year, now I've #FinishedReading this relatively early piece of #KimStanleyRobinson #SciFi . An interesting way to approach a utopian setting (Orange County CA after a global eco-revolution), focusing on human-level dramas (corruption in local politics, unrequited love, grief) rather than a grand threat to the utopia. #KSR #Bookstodon @bookstodon

Coyote, a stowaway on the spaceship Ares that brought the First Hundred to Mars, was a prominent figure of the underground resistance in #KimStanleyRobinson's #MarsTrilogy.
Here we see one of his hideouts, on the other side of the Neretva Vallis riverbank 🙃 🤣

Imagine this isn't #Perseverance but something 10 times bigger and centuries later, and the operation isn't abrading a rock for science, but surface mining Mars for profit. Is that #SciFi? Or is it just the ugly future for Mars?

Anyway, the issues in #LKQvGM are ones I've been thinking about for a long time.
In fact, I wrote about #KSR & design patents in my very first law review article: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1926162
For some more recent thoughts:

Localization of the first trip to the North Pole in #KimStanleyRobinson's #RedMars, with a stop at Chasma Boreale, where an Ice Miner was dropped by air at coordinates 41 W, 83 N to extract water for use in Underhill.
The first map is a polar projection showing the trip from Underhill to the North Pole.
The second map is a detail of the approach to the pole, drawn on an #ESA #MarsExpress image processed by @andrealuck , from here: https://mastodon.social/@andrealuck@fosstodon.org/110327396095633780

Today in design patents: GM's response to LKQ's petition for rehearing is due today.
For a short explanation of why I think the #Rosen reference requirement is (generally) a good thing, see: https://patentlyo.com/patent/2022/12/defense-rosen-references.html
I've been on the record (for a long time) saying the Federal Circuit interprets "basically the same" to require to high a level of similarity, but that Rosen's focus on the design as a whole is a good thing: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1926162

I've localized with certainty the landing site and base built by the First Hundred on Mars in September 2027, called Underhill. That's of course in Kim Stanley Robinson's SciFi Mars Trilogy, [Red | Green | Blue] Mars.
The key for this is the phrase:
"One day they came back excited, having reached Ganges Catena, a series of sinkholes in the plain a hundred kilometers to the southeast", around page 97 in Red Mars. And here are the maps 🤓 :

And the South Pole:

Anyone reading Kim Stanley Robinson's "Mars Trilogy" or any part of it quickly realizes that while the novels are full of technical details, there are very few maps and those that exist are very coarse.
Here are some maps I made while reading the books several years ago, showing cities, places and plot info. The background is a USGS Topographical Map from Wikipedia: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/48/USGS-PlanetMars-TopographicalMap.png
Corrections and new locations will be posted to this thread.

Bennett's designs are by far the best I've found for #KSR's Mars novels, but are now hard to locate in the internets. Here's another one I've saved on disk several years ago:
