Clint Eastwood: Still With Us, Facebook Notwithstanding

BAYBAY CITY, LEYTE, Philippines — August 29, 2026 — Every so often, Facebook kills Clint Eastwood.

The reports appear with just enough plausibility to make you stop scrolling. Eastwood is, after all, 96 years old. He has largely withdrawn from the Hollywood spotlight, and when one of the most recognizable actors and directors of the last six decades becomes quiet, the internet inevitably fills the silence with speculation.

But as of August 29, 2026, Clint Eastwood is still with us.

There has been no credible announcement of his death from his family or representatives and no corresponding obituary from the major news organizations that would report his death almost immediately. There also is no reliable public reporting establishing that Eastwood is hospitalized or suffering from a newly disclosed major illness.

That hasn’t prevented rumors about his health, including claims of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, from circulating online. At present, those claims lack credible confirmation. What we actually know is considerably less dramatic: Eastwood is 96, increasingly private, and no longer maintaining anything resembling the public schedule he once did.

Considering the man’s life, perhaps he has earned the right to sit down.

Before Hollywood, There Was the Army

Eastwood’s biography didn’t begin with a poncho, a .44 Magnum, or a cowboy squint.

He was drafted into the United States Army in 1951 during the Korean War era. He served primarily at Fort Ord in California, including duty as a swimming instructor and lifeguard, before leaving the Army in 1953.

That sounds fairly uneventful until you get to the airplane.

During his military service, Eastwood was a passenger aboard a Navy aircraft that experienced trouble and ditched in the Pacific off California. Eastwood survived and made a lengthy swim toward shore.

Suddenly, “swimming instructor” doesn’t sound quite so incidental.

Eastwood was a Korean War-era Army veteran, although he did not serve in combat in Korea. It’s a distinction worth maintaining because the real story is remarkable enough without embellishment.

And Then There Was Kelly

For millions of moviegoers, Eastwood eventually became the Man with No Name and Dirty Harry Callahan. But there is another Eastwood character who remains permanently lodged in popular memory: Private Kelly.

Kelly’s Heroes, released in 1970, was ostensibly a World War II movie. In practice, it was a war movie, heist movie, comedy, and counterculture satire thrown into the same Sherman tank.

Eastwood’s Kelly discovers that a fortune in Nazi gold is sitting behind enemy lines and assembles an unofficial expedition to retrieve it. Along for the ride were Telly Savalas, Don Rickles and, most memorably, Donald Sutherland as Oddball—the hippie tank commander who somehow wandered backward through time from 1969 into World War II.

It shouldn’t have worked.

It worked beautifully.

Still Here

Eastwood’s career ultimately became far larger than any single character. Actor, director, producer, composer and filmmaker, he continued directing movies decades beyond the age when most people retire from ordinary employment.

At 96, his increasing privacy isn’t evidence of some hidden catastrophe. It is evidence that Clint Eastwood is 96.

Eventually, of course, the headline Facebook keeps prematurely publishing will be true. Mortality wins every argument eventually.

But not today.

As of August 29, 2026, Clint Eastwood is still here.

And somewhere, one hopes, Oddball would consider that an excellent reason to stop spreading those negative waves.
