  5. You may never have heard of #Alexis #Wilkins,
but she is one of the best-protected country music singers in the United States.

F.B.I. tactical agents have ferried her to a resort in Britain before a dinner at Windsor Castle
and to an appointment at a hair salon in Nashville.
Last April, agents in two SUVs stood guard outside a senior center in Ronald Reagan’s boyhood home of Dixon, Ill., while she sang for a few dozen young conservatives.

Ms. Wilkins, 27, is the girlfriend of #Kash #Patel,
    Donald Trump’s 46-year-old F.B.I. director,
whose personal use of government jets and F.B.I. agents for himself and Ms. Wilkins has led to growing questions even inside the Trump administration.

“When Kash got confirmed, life changed for her,” said Dianna Muller, the founder of the group "Women for Gun Rights", which briefly employed Ms. Wilkins as a spokeswoman.

To an extent not previously reported,
Ms. Wilkins is escorted in her travels by Special Weapons and Tactics team members drawn from F.B.I. field offices around the country.

SWAT teams are chiefly trained to arrest violent criminals, free hostages and thwart terrorists.

But Mr. Patel’s demand that rotating SWAT teams provide his girlfriend with security for singing appearances, personal engagements and errands is unprecedented in the F.B.I., former agents said.

  18. To bolster his efforts to control elections,
Trump has stacked the Department of Justice ( #DOJ ) with officials who have supported his baseless claims of rampant voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election
and who may have worked to overturn state election results on behalf of his campaign.

These include top officials like Attorney General #Pam #Bondi and FBI Director #Kash #Patel
    — both of whom would not say who won the 2020 election during their confirmation hearings.

But it also includes those selected to lead offices that enforce federal laws protecting the right to vote.

Trump nominated #Harmeet #Dhillon, one of his loyal allies who has been involved in dozens of lawsuits challenging voting rights laws, redistricting and election processes,
to lead the Civil Rights Division.

Often referred to as the “crown jewel” of the DOJ, the division is core to protecting civil rights and liberties.

Dhillon has yet to be confirmed,
but the Civil Rights Division has already abruptly shifted away from defending voting rights.

So far, it’s dropped voting rights lawsuits against Texas, Virginia and Alabama.

It also retracted a previous request to participate in a lawsuit over unfair voting maps in Louisiana that’s set to be heard by the Supreme Court.

Weiner, the Brennan Center director, said that the country,
    even in Trump’s first term,
never had a DOJ so readily turned into “the president’s personal law firm.”

“Which is just not what the DOJ is.
It’s just not what anyone has understood the DOJ to be,” Weiner said.

    “But it is incredibly risky.”

In future elections, such officials may be more willing to not act if voting rights are threatened,
or could oppose efforts to protect voting rights.

They may also be more likely to pursue criminal investigations, and even prosecutions, against voters and election administrators over spurious allegations of fraud.

  24. ‘Unqualified henchmen’:
fears rise as Trump names far-right podcaster as FBI deputy director

Fears over the future direction of the FBI have intensified after Donald Trump announced that a far-right podcaster, #Dan #Bongino, who has never served in the bureau, would become its next deputy director.

Bongino, a former New York police officer and Secret Service agent who provided security to Presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama, is best known as a conservative commentator who has vocally supported Trump’s false claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.
His appointment as deputy to the newly confirmed director, #Kash #Patel, marks the first time in the bureau’s 117-year history that the second-in-command post has not been held by one of its senior agents.

It further increased fears – already high following Patel’s confirmation as director – that the administration would attempt to use the bureau to pursue its political enemies.

“Donald Trump just named far-right MAGA podcaster Dan Bongino, a notorious conspiracy theorist who promoted the lie that the 2020 election was ‘stolen,’ to serve as Deputy Director of the FBI. God help us all,” posted the X account Republicans Against Trump.

  25. #CPAC has largely abandoned its libertarian-leaning roots to embrace the aggressive authoritarianism of Donald Trump, the MAGA movement, and its overseas partners.
This year’s conference is triumphalist in tone -- not surprising given Trump’s election victory and combative first 30 days.

Speaker after speaker dutifully repeated Trump’s claims that his election will usher in a new “golden age” for America.

Speaker after speaker repeated false DOGE claims about uncovering massive “waste, fraud, and abuse” in government spending.

The crowd cheered every time a speaker celebrated the Senate confirmation of FBI Director #Kash #Patel, who was embraced by Senate Republicans despite evidence that he committed perjury during his confirmation hears when asked about the ongoing purge of career officials from the FBI.

  26. News organizations are bracing for the incoming Trump administration to go after journalists’ sources and take legal action against them.

In an email shared with Semafor, Axios’ senior counsel told staff that the news organization anticipates the new administration will attempt to force reporters to out their sources,
will ramp up lawsuits against news organizations for defamation,
and could charge journalists with crimes using the Espionage Act.

“We anticipate more aggressive government efforts to investigate leaks
    — which could include a wave of subpoenas seeking journalists’ phone records, documents, and testimony,”
senior newsroom counsel Brian Westley wrote in an email to staff.

“Of particular concern: [Stories] involving unnamed sources that disclose government information without authorization
    — including sensitive conversations including the president or other top officials.”

    “This stuff is NO JOKE.
The framework of legal protections for journalists we live under is relatively recent and under real threat.
One bad court case could have a big impact,
so it’s important for everybody to be careful and aware of the risks,”
    the company said.

Media organizations are increasingly on high alert as multiple incoming members of the administration have expressed a willingness to use the tools of their office to pursue legal action against journalists.

#Brendan #Carr, Donald Trump’s pick for Federal Communications Commission chair, said he wants to explore whether to strip local stations of their broadcast licenses,

while #Kash #Patel, who Trump has tapped to lead the FBI, has said he wants “to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens, who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections.”

    As has been well documented,
Trump’s nominees could also have broad license to interfere in the major media mergers many companies are itching to do over the next several years.

At least one news organization seemed to want to get out of Trump’s way preemptively.

On Saturday, media insiders were shocked when ABC News agreed to pay $15 million to settle a defamation suit brought by Trump over inaccurate claims made by anchor George Stephanopoulos,
one most media lawyers thought the organization could have won in court

  27. FBI Director #Christopher #Wray and Donald Trump's team are planning for the possibility that the president-elect will replace Wray during the new administration, three people familiar with the matter told NBC News.

One person under consideration for Wray's job is Trump adviser #Kash #Patel, who is also being considered to lead the CIA, according to two other sources.

Wray, whom Trump appointed in 2017 to a 10-year term, enjoys leading the FBI and had intended to serve out his term, a source said.

But he's also preparing for the possibility that Trump will seek to replace him, according to a separate source.
All the sources spoke on condition of anonymity to recount sensitive discussions.
