  7. @spaf

Police action definitely guarantees that no one will ever hear about #KariNewell DUI conviction or the police chief's sexual misconduct:

Very intelligent action taken by sheriff to safeguard data privacy.

  9. Really good interview with Eric Meyer, publisher of the Marion County Record from the Handbasket blog.

"So the backstory that we haven't told, because we don't wanna get in trouble, is that we've been investigating the police chief [Gideon Cody]. When he was named Chief just two months ago, we got an outpouring of calls from his former co-workers making a wide array of allegations against him saying that he was about to be demoted at his previous job and that he retired to avoid demotion and punishment over sexual misconduct charges and other things.”

  14. Seems the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (Kansas state police) were also involved in the raid on the Marion County Record, its owner, and employees.

"Marion police had coordinated with the KBI earlier in the week to launch the investigation. Though the KBI assigned an agent to the case Aug. 8 that has been 'assisting since that time,' KBI representatives stressed that the KBI agent didn’t apply for the search warrants and was not present when the warrants were served."

  19. Why would the Marion, KS police be willing to go to such lengths over an allegation of “identity theft” by a local restaurant owner? Why not just a subpoena? Maybe this:

"The Record had been actively investigating Police Chief Gideon Cody at the time of the raid after receiving tips that he had left his previous job in Kansas City, Mo., to avoid repercussions for alleged sexual misconduct charges, … Though the paper never ran the information, details about the investigation — including the identities of those who made the allegations against Cody — were in a computer seized by police.”

  24. If you've followed the story of the (probably illegal) small town Kansas police raid on the Marion County Record newspaper, it's owner, publisher, and reporters — it gets worse. The 98 year old owner of the paper died yesterday, the day after the raid on her home.

might interested to know this is available to the public, if they allow her a liquor license.

How far back does the background check go anyway?
Seems like a lot of wasted effort if it's only 7-10 years.

“When they came into the establishment, I quietly and politely asked them to exit,” said. “I didn’t feel that their constituents needed to be exposed to any risk of being misquoted.”

Well, , that is very bad reasoning. We do our own analysis of the media in these parts. If Jake LaTurner's people claim he was misquoted, it's on them to provide accurate quotes within their response(s).

  33. The only question I have about the #MarionKSPolice is did they confiscate the newspaper's computers/phones to plant evidence, or to delete the evidence they were trying to set them up?

It'd be great if we knew everything about #KariNewell! kansasreflector.com/2023/08/11
