Rudolf Ewald Stier, Lutheran pastor, considers Lazarus + Ecclesiasticus: “do good to a friend before thou die”. The rich man’s guilt is shown that Lazarus lay there.
Stier does not ask how whether the rich man gave more than heathens, or if Lazarus were of high character. Stier draws guilt at the existence of unaided misery before one’s eyes.
How can you consider the misery and end of man?

Edward Reynolds was at the Westminster Assembly. A Christian will wipe away tears, remove groans, fill bellies, and lift the sinking. Good deeds turn recipients into solicitors for your well being.
Not exactly a prosperity gospel, as the recipient is not a preacher’s jet aeroplane fund.
How can you wipe away tears, remove sighs and groans, clothe backs, fill bellies and lift sinking people?
