One thing I don't understand about Government's paranoia about #jury trials and nullification, is that they aren't and never were instant "get out of jail" card for #defendants (even if some jurors may be sympathetic).
For instance out of those liberating #beagles from an #animaltesting lab, many suspects were sent before #CrownCourt - some got acquitted but others found guilty, and it seemed to be a complete lottery as to what happened.
I was on jury service myself in 2023, and I admit the amount of disruption it caused to my life made it harder for me not to look for reasons for finding defendants guilty (unless it was something like eco/left political protests/animal rights)
(In the end I was discharged without being put on a jury as the Court couldn't find any shorter cases)

Judge Eric Davis ruled earlier that #Newsmax did indeed #defame Denver-based #DominionVotingSystems by airing false information [#lies] about the company & its equipment. But Davis left it to a #jury to eventually decide whether that was done with #malice, &, if so, how much #Dominion deserved from Newsmax in #damages. Newsmax & Dominion reached the settlement before the trial could take place.
The settlement was disclosed by Newsmax on Monday in a new filing with the #SEC. -

In addition to Biggs, another fmr #FarRight #ProudBoys ldr #ZacharyRehl was #sentenced today. Rehl is to serve 15 years in #prison, after a #jury #convicted him of #SeditiousConspiracy for storming the US Capitol in a failed bid to overturn #Trump's #2020election defeat.
The prison terms handed down by US Dist Judge Timothy Kelly for #Biggs & #Rehl, …sentenced for the #Jan6, 2021, attack, were below US #SentencingGuidelines & far lower than the 33-yr & 30-yr terms sought by #FederalProsecutors.

Das Thema ist wieder aufgetaucht, nachdem der #Parkland-Schütze Nikolas Cruz zu lebenslanger #Haft verurteilt wurde, weil die #Jury nicht einstimmig war.
Der Abgeordnete Berny Jacques sagte: "Dieses #Gesetz wird einen Fehler in unseren Gesetzen korrigieren, ein Gesetz, das auf einem fehlerhaften Urteil des Obersten Gerichtshofs basierte, das vor drei Jahren aufgehoben wurde."
Die Gegner des Gesetzes verweisen auf die Insassen der #Todeszellen in Florida, die entlastet wurden.
Der Abgeordnete Daryl Campbell sagte: "Unser System ist fehlerhaft. Ich halte es für ungeheuerlich, dass wir von einer einstimmigen Entscheidung zu einer acht zu vier Entscheidung über die Todesstrafe übergehen."
Der Vorschlag würde sich nur auf das #Urteilsverfahren auswirken und nicht auf die so genannte #Schuldphase in #Mordfälle|n. Die Geschworenen müssten die #Angeklagten nach wie vor einstimmig für schuldig befinden, bevor die #Verurteilung beginnen kann.
