"The code was written by AI. The commit was written by AI. The PR description was written by AI. At what point in that chain did you actually stop and think about what you were shipping?"
Owain tackles the problems #JuniorDevelopers are going to be facing in the world of #AI in this thought-provoking article 👇

🚀 Breaking news from the Fastly Institute of Duh: Senior developers are now #outsourcing their jobs to #AI, proving once and for all that experience is just a fancy word for "I let robots do my homework." 🤖 Meanwhile, juniors are still stuck writing actual code like it's 2019. 😂 Shocking insights, or just another Tuesday in tech?

💡 I have an idea for a project to help developers and aspiring developers, but I need your input!
I've noticed that many people coming out of bootcamps or self-study programs struggle with the basics—things that are essential for real-world software development. I want to understand if this is a common issue and what kind of support might be helpful.
If you're a developer (or thinking about becoming one), I’d really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to fill out this short survey:
Your feedback will help shape the direction of this project. And if you know someone who might have insights, please share!

Tips for junior developers
Ask for support. Ask for a mentor. Ask questions.
If you are told "no" when you ask for help, find your own mentors - in or outside of the company. Reach out to the wider community.
Pair with everyone. You learn amazing things, and you figure out who is a good fit for you - and who you can ask to be your mentor.
Sometimes leaving for another job is for the best.
-
How it can go wrong
Many junior developers consider quitting tech after a bad experience.
This is a problem, we want junior developers to enjoy the experience and to be supported and encouraged.
"Tech is for me" <-- might not feel comfortable saying this
-
Give developers tools for anonymous feedback, giving psychological safety.
Some fear losing their job and an inability to get a new job, so they are anxious about rocking the boat by speaking up.
----
Be wary of lack of knowledge. Don't assume someone knows to run "composer install" - junior developers will follow instructions very literally.
Tell them when you feel like an impostor. Tell them when you needed to Google something.
-
How to set up junior devs for success and help them
60% of developers surveyed said mentorship helped them the most
After setting up a pairing channel, they found that it resulted in 15% fewer bugs.
Code was also more optimised due to pair programming. More manageable code, easier for the code reviewer.
-
Gaps affect everyone, not only juniors.
Developer time is expensive.
Find problems... and fix them... with the help of junior developers.
Demo of a junior dev finding issues:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammerHumor/comments/mt2nug/the_pitfalls_of_a_legacy_codebase/"Netflix Chaos Monkey" -> they automate junior developers 🤪 Automatically turn off random servers and see what happens.

-
Mentorship helps everyone
Also consider the bus factor / lottery factor. It's not just seniors mentoring juniors... but employees helping each other to understand.
-
Junior developers have fresh perspectives and it's worth encouraging them to speak up.
"It didn't work when we tried it last time."
Why don't you try it again?
Companies change. Situations change. And with the energy and excitement of junior devs ... the result might be different this time.
-
Senior developers have a role to play in encouraging junior developers.
But why should you hire junior devs?

Is there a podcast or blog series where developers talk about how they got their first development job?
I am *constantly* hearing from junior developers who have been applying for jobs for weeks, months, even a year or more, and haven't even gotten called back for an interview. And these are smart, hardworking people.

Opened more sessions for #mentoring at #ADPList, a free platform to connect with #mentors world-wide.
I’m a senior #developer at a digital product agency, working with clients like IKEA, Google, Steve Jobs Archive. I have 5 years professional experience, but have been tinkering with HTML/CSS/JS since the early 2000s. I love chatting with #JuniorDevelopers, early career or career switchers, and people interested in learning #accessibility.

I’ve never really cared about follower counts. Instead, I’ve always tried to create meaningful connections in the #software #WebDev #programming #gaming spaces. Both professionally and personally, having a network of people in these spaces across the globe has enriched my life ten fold. I’ll never ask for boosts or follows - but I will ask, if you ever want to connect, just DM me and I’ll try to respond quickly. Let’s celebrate #projects #promotions #JuniorDevelopers #NewJob #games and whatever!
